Best way to pay for a speeding ticket

Has anyone on this forum gotten a speeding ticket in Iceland?

I received a speeding ticket via e-mail a few days after I came back home. They outlined two ways to pay: wire transfer or paying with credit card, which involves providing credit card info via e-mail/call. If you've been in the same predicament before, I'd be grateful to hear what you think is the best/easiest way to handle this. Thank you!

We've never had a speeding ticket, but we did have a parking ticket in Italy. Wire transfers can be quite expensive. My credit union charges $40 for doing the wire transfer. Will the agency accept WISE? Or do you have a Charles Schwab account? With Schwab the wire transfer charge is between $0 and $15. Personally, I wouldn't hesitate to give CC information over the phone, and I'd probably be ok with email it.

Many of us have seen a $40 charge from a car rental companies. That was service charges to tell a police dept. our name and address so they can send us a ticket from a camera/radar unit. I got a bill from the City of Venice demanding a fine be paid in Euros directly to their checking account--giving the bank account #.

There are online bill payment companies in Europe that will charge your credit card and forward the $ to pay your fine directly to a city. And the cost to process the payment is reasonable.

David, I'm not sure if you are talking about the $40 in my post? If so, the $40 is not a charge from the rental car company. $40 is a fee charged by my credit union for a wire transfer of any amount for any reason.

Mei--I can't help as we have never gotten a ticket there. The cameras are no joke, as you found out. You might check with the car rental company and see if they can pay the ticket for you with the CC you used. I have heard of this, but do not have first hand experience.

Thank you all for your response.

I will check with Schwab re wire transfer (my bank charges $50 for wire transfer) and the car rental company to see if they can pay the fine with the credit card I used for car rental. If all fails, I can always get up early to call them directly.

Not to look for excuses, but I found it very easy to go above the speed limit in Iceland (highest I saw was 90 km/hr, which is lower than 60 mph). So be careful and watch your speed, especially at times when you are trying to get somewhere fast.

Mei--The speed cameras are everywhere. Plus we have seen the police pull people over a fair amount. Iceland is one place that we do not go over the limit at all.

Iceland has a modern government and infrastructure so the best way is to pick one of the options offered to you. I believe you’ll be reasonably protected with your banking information.

Many people on the forim have used Wise (formerly TransferWise) to pay European traffic fines. The fees are very low, and no one has reported a negative experience that I've seen.
