Will be leaving Reykjavik early in the morning to head to the Hot Springs. Not looking for the most direct route, but sure do want to see as much beautiful scenery as possible. Should I head up route 1 to 47. Or should I head up 36 to 48 route also would it be worthwhile to drive around hvalfjordour? please share with me the most beautiful way to get there.

IME they are pretty much the same as far as scenery. We have gone 1 to 47 twice and then once we did 36/48 but the opposite direction. If you are just doing this as a day trip, why not take one way up and the other back? IMO, the scenery between the two is not the best of Iceland, but it isn't bad.
