Be(a)ware of Westfjords roads

The Westfjords are beautiful, however you do need a vehicle that is 4wd. Some travel literature lists the drive to the Latrabjarg bird cliffs as an easy drive. Yes, if you don't mind a 1 lane road with sheer drop offs of hundreds of feet and minimal guard rails. We turned around when we got 3/4 of the way, went back to Flokalundur and headed north to Dynjandi falls on our way to Isafjordur. This drive is more terrifying than giving birth. No exageration. Muddy, one lane, no guard rails, thousand(s?) feet drop-offs. We were above the clouds and it was rain/snow mix in June. Should have filed a travel plan with authorities as no one would have ever found us had we gone off the road. It was breathtakingly beautiful. Glad we lived to tell about it. Just be prepared for what you're getting into. We would have gladly left the rental car and flown out had that been a possibility.
