Arrival day schedule for a ring road trip

My wife and I arrive for 13 days in Iceland at 6:40 am on a Monday in June. We'll pick up a rental car and baring any issues should be on our way mid morning. Flying in from the east coast though, I expect we'll need to call it a day around dinner time. Figure maybe 8 hours max.

We don't want to over do it day one, but want to make the best of the short day before the jet lag kicks in. I'm considering several options for our first couple days on our clockwise ring road trip. I wanted to see what other travelers have found best to start off and avoid the feeling of being shortchanged the first day on their tour.

First option, Reykavik. Walk around Reykavik, Hallgrimskirkja, Parliament Building, Rainbow Street and maybe the National Museum or Whales of Iceland. Overnight in Reykavik, Golden Circle on day 2, head north on the ring road on day 3. This option feels like its shortchanging Reykavik. But one day for Reykavivk seems to be the opinion of most folks, so maybe this is the best option. Particularly if we return to overnight in Reykavik after spending day 2 on the GC.

Second option, jump right in on the Golden Circle, Kerid, Gullfoss, Geysir, Thingvellir, Fridheimar, Skalholt, Secret Lagoon. Overnight in the Golden Circle, finish up what we weren't able to see of the GC on day 2. Give Reykavik a full day on day 3. Start the ring road on day 4. This one feels more relaxed and gives us some flexibility on our schedule.

Third option, Skip both Reykavik and GC, head towards Borgarnes, Grabok, maybe Deildartunguhver. Overnight around Borðeyri. If we did this route, we'd come back to Reykavik and GC at the end. This gets us a jump on the Ring Road, and lines up more with the RS suggestion of doing GC at the end of the Ring Road.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks

Absolutely stay close on day of arrival. Head to Reykjavik and do everything in town that day and sleep there, then head out in the morning. The overnight flights from the US are no joke, and let lag can be lethal. It has been a problem in Iceland with visitors causing accidents due to being sleepy.

Do not do the GC on day 2, do that at the end of the trip to save backtracking.

We have been many times, and our 2nd trip was like what you are planning. We had 12 nights and went clockwise. Do not miss Snaefellsness, you have time for that with 12 nights.

To save yourself a bit of a headache, opt for a hotel in Reykjavik that has parking so you don't have to go finding it. Not fun with jetlag;) Three places that we have stayed and like, and have parking on site are Hotel Fron, Center Hotel Midgardur and Center Hotel Laugarvegur. There are others of course, but I can vouch for these.

Good Morning -
Here's what we did in August, 2022 and are planning for in 2025 or 2026 - it worked great.
- We're 81 & 82, in good condition and no longer aggressive hikers but previously did some significant/serious treks
- Flew from Atlanta at 6:10 PM to KEF at 9:30 AM through JFK for a 17 day trip
- Rented a car from Blue Car Rental and drove to Vik the same day - we went counterclockwise
- Typically stayed places for two days - no more road racing at our age
- Rearranged the later portion of our trip enroute to avoid storms and bad weather in the Westfjords
- Returned to Reykjavik for our last three nights and returned the rental car to the City Office. This is the HUGE benefit in renting from Blue.
- Took a limo to the airport for a 11:25 AM return flight. This is not the cheapest option but well worth it IMO.
I trust this helps - if you want more details about anything, just let me know - I'm pleased to assist. Happy New Year.

Ken--We hav used Blue on 5 of our trips. The first 4 times they were great, but this past September they were horrendous. I could not believe they were the same company we have used in the past. Long story short, we basically got a rent a wreck vehicle. Big dents, scratches all over, filthy dirty, etc. Plus it would just randomly die at quick stops, like leaving a parking lot etc. The clincher though was their response. We head back again this summer,r as well, 8th trip, and will not use Blue again, FWIW.

@mikliz97, Thanks, that helps alot. I didn't want to shortchange Reykavik, but also didn't want to be sitting in Reykavik on day 2 looking for ways to fill the day. We've flown to Europe a few times, and know how hard jetlag hits on day 1. It'll be a short night as it is. We have a direct flight from Raleigh Durham on IcelandAir, leaving at 8:30 pm ET, arriving at 6:40 am local time.

...before the jet lag kicks in...

Jet lag, in my experience, does not always kick in at the same time after arrival. And you stated you know how hard it hits. Trying to drive eight hours after an overnight flight and being on strange turf to boot is, in my humble opinion, an accident waiting to happen. Even a small fender bender withour injuries at the start of the trip will, at a minumum, put a damper on the rest of the trip. I don't mean to be Debbie Downer, but for the safety of all concerned, reconsidering driving the first day. It's your decision of course, but it might be one you regret.
