I have now booked two days in Vik and 5 days in the capital but I am still looking for ideas for the first three nights. I am looking into seeing some of the west part of Iceland and was thinking of staying in either Akranes or Borgarnes? It will be the first 2 nights and then I can figure something out before picking up my friend. Arkranes seems much cheaper but is it too far from the crater and other hikes? Thanks for tips

Assuming you will have a car, I think that Borganes would be the better location. We didn't stop in Akranes, but Rick Steves made it sound like more of an industrial town and it's further from some of the sights you might want to see. Borganes is small, but has a museum and several restaurants. We stopped to visit the museum and have lunch there one day, then stopped for dinner another day. It was appealing and I wouldn't hesitate to stay there. You can reach the tip of the Snaefellness Peninsula in under 2 hours or the Reykholt area with the crater, Husafells waterfalls, geothermal area, and glacier in under an hour. Then, it's still a pretty easy drive back to the airport.
