Advice on bus tour companies in Iceland

Do all bus tour companies follow the same route? Why is there such a big price difference?
Is bus travel Iceland better than Reykjavik excursions?

Are you talking about one day tours or multi day tours?

For one day tours price varies depending on what is included and size of the group.

Multi day tours differ depening on quality of accomodations and how many included meals.

Reykjavik Excursion is the oldest, and I believe the biggest, tour company in Iceland. They operate the Flybus from Keflavik Airport and you can sometimes work out package deals.

I took a tour with Troll this past June and it was a great day. They use smaller vans. I think there were 11 people on the tour.

OP, maybe you could tell us what you are looking for, such as a day tour out of Reykjavik or a multi-day tour. There are several local companies that run various tours that we can recommend to you.

They are all good and I doubt anyone can say which is best. All have breen around for awhile.

Read reviews, check the itineraries, decide what size group you want to go with, and make sure they go to the places you wish to see.

Then choose.

We have used Grayline, Reykjavik Excursions and Troll. The first two use big coach buses. Troll uses small buses, about 16 or so people. We have used the first two on our first trip ten years ago but have used Troll on several recent trips. Troll would be my choice. Our guides have always been excellent and the company itself is great. One trip was cancelled due to weather and they were great with communication and the refund was done instantly.

I’ve used Grayline twice. Frist time was their Golden Circle Express ( 6 hr ) which had a smaller bus. Second time was to the southeast. I can’t remember for sure, but I think it was the standard bus size. .both tours were very good.

It is best to read the tour description. Personally, I like the smaller bus tours rather than the big GreyLine tours. Ones with just 15-16 people. Look at their stops, do they have what you want to see or not? Where is the pick-up point? How long is the tour? All of those things affect the price.

I agree with mikliz97. We used Troll Tours for Snaefellsnes Peninsula tour. It was a very good tour - much better than the Golden Circle tour we took with Nice Travel (which was decent). Ask for Elias if you can get him. It was like having a professor on board. And he is very nice and considerate to the passengers. He can speak extemporaneously on a variety of subjects - Iceland and otherwise. Really good tour company. Mercedes Sprinter 19 passenger van. Easy on, easy off. Seats are adequate width wise and for leg room. Backpack storage is limited. We were there in late August.

There are a lot of tour companies in Iceland. These are just some of them:

Arctic Adventures - Wide tour selection all over the country, one of the largest companies
Reykjavik Excursions - Wide tour selection all over the country, one of the largest companies
Bus Travel Iceland - Large tour operator
Grayline - Large tour operator
Snæland Travel - Small local family owned company
Nordic Visitor - Large tour operator
Icelandia - Large tour operator
Terra Nova - Large tour operator
Iceland Tours - Large tour operator
GJ travel - Small local company
Mountain Guides - Small local company
Troll - Small local company
Iceland Travel Guide - Small local company

For the price differences look at the group sizes, length in hours, luggage restrictions, if there are any paid sights included like Kerið on the Golden Circle, and amenities such wifi on the bus, drinks, snacks etc.
As for BT vs. RE - I'd assume they're pretty similar. Most tour companies will take similar routes for example for the South Coast tours, Snæfellsnes, going to Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon etc. but some will include additional stops and visit different locations so I'd keep an eye out for that when comparing them.

I can't answer your question, but do you fully understand how large the distances involved are? That's one reason why the responding question about whether you want a multi-day product or not, is so important. There are not enough hotel rooms for the demand in the high season of Iceland. So it's reasonable to make day trips out of Reykjavik. But that means a lot of time sitting on the bus, to and from the capital city. You are asking for a short, simple answer to a complex question that has many shades of detail to it.
