We spent 10 days in Iceland this past September and relied on Rick Steve’s Iceland and Fodors Iceland to plan our itinerary. The most beautiful sight was in Fodors only and I would highly recommend a stop at Fjadrargljfur. A short trip up a bumpy potholed gravel road brings you to a parking lot. A short walk brings you to a magnificent gorge/canyon covered with emerald green moss. There are nice walkways along the top of the canyon- a photographers dream. This site is just north of Vik off the Ring Road. For a taste of this beautiful sight, look a the YOUTUBE video of Justin Bieber Iceland. For a while this idiot’s posting of his video shut the site down, but in September it was open and not crowded at all.
Looks like a beautiful spot! I just returned from a shorter trip and two of my guides ranted about the "Bieber" effect on tourism, primarily his inspiration of very bad behavior, including walking on the moss - a big no-no as it takes decades for it to regrow. Curse and blessing to have the visitors of all types! More on the Bieber angle: https://guidetoiceland.is/history-culture/5-reasons-why-you-should-not-travel-like-justin-bieber-in-iceland
We visited this canyon on our trip in September 2017 and thought it was one of the highlights of our trip. We were with a group of seven and a guide and had it all to ourselves.
I agree -- this is a beautiful spot! We were there in September of 2017 . One of the things we found on our 2 week ring road is that some of the best things we saw we just stumbled upon on the side of the road!
