I have already rented a car and know the distance from the airport to the city. I wish I had more time to do the golden circle but just don’t think it’s worthwhile with only eight hours.. So, should I just stay down in the peninsula area around the airport, what is there to see..of course I know about the blue lagoon but don’t want to pay those prices. Is there another lagoon with a beautiful area that I should head to? It’s my first time in Iceland and I could do an hour in the city, but prefer beautiful areas or doing a short hike somewhere.
More info would help - what time of year? What hours of the day? Will you be driving jet lagged? Do you have full eight hours, and that accounts for the drive time and the 2-3 hours before your flight you need to be at the airport to return your car and go through security, etc.?
I've not been but people recommend Sky Lagoon https://www.skylagoon.com/visit/opening-hours/
You could combine a hike with soaking and do the Reykjadalur hot thermal river hike. It is about 45 minutes each way and then whatever time you spend soaking.
I would not stick around the airport, but the Reykjanes Peninsula has a lot to see. Gardur lighthouses (and small museum there), the bridge across continents, Gunnhuver geothermal area, the Reykjanesviti lighthouse and the cliffs just past it, the Hopsnes Peninsula, and Lake Kleifarvatn would be a nice day. We have done this a few times when we had time to kill and I love this area as there are not many people who visit it, so places are not overcrowded.
If you want to notepad the BL prices, there is Sky Lagoon in Reykjavik that is a bit less. We have done both several times and I much prefer Sky, but that is just me.
Thanks for both your responses. To answer the first one. It will be late May. From about 7 to 3 PM that is the time we have with plenty of time to still get to the airport.
I did see theReykjadalur river hike and it looks very interesting to us!
