8 Day Iceland Itinerary

My parents and I are heading to Iceland in September for the first time!! I’ve made a rough itinerary but I want to know if it’s realistic and if there are any must-see spots in the areas we are going to. We like to avoid crowds and I am an avid hiker if that helps. Here it is:

9/5 - land at 8:30
Pick up rental car
Grocery shop
Drive to Sanefellsnes Peninsula
Maybe do a short hike

9/6 - drive around Snaefellsnes
Highlights:
Sunrise at Kirkjufell
Ararstapi & hellnar
Drive to western fjords

9/7 - western Fjords
9/8 west fjords
Drive to south coast

9/9 - take ferry to westman islands
9/10 - stay in Vik, explore black sand beaches - hike seljandsfoss evening
9/11 - stay in Jokusarlon, maybe take an ice cave tour?
9/12 - drive to Reykjavik, explore
9/13 breakfast in Reykajavik, fly out at 3:30 pm

If you have any suggestions or think this is too much for the time we have, I’d love to know. Thanks!

My suggestion is to skip the Westfjords. Spend more time in the south and east part of the country, including Golden Circle. There is SOOO much to see there and you are not spending enough time there. Hit up the Reykjanes Peninsula on your way back to Reykjavik. Go to Westfjords on your next trip!

ps, the TripAdvisor Iceland forum is very active. You might get some more feedback there.
