2 Day Stopover in Reykjavik - Center Hotels Plaza or ?

Hi All,

We are doing a 2 day stopover in Iceland thanks to Iceland Air on monday 2/23 and Tuesday 2/24. We arrive very early monday morning at 7:30 AM. and leave very early Wednesday at 7:30 AM .

  1. Suggested hotels in Reykjavik - Would appreciate any suggestions for hotel in Reykjavik for 2 nights for 2 adults. We have been looking at Center Hotels Plaza in Reykjavik but appreciate any suggestions. Some have posted that is very loud.

  2. How to plan first day and get from airport to hotel - Also for someone arriving on Monday 2/23 at 7:30 AM , how would we plan that day? some have suggested doing the Blue Lagoon tour on the way from airport to hotel. We also want to see Golden Circle.

  3. Any other suggestions for 2 days?

thanks , Todd and Janette

We have stayed at a number of the Center Hotels and really like them. Center Hotel Plaza is one that we have stayed at a few times, and are booked for again in March. I love the location as it is right smack in the heart of town. Hotel Fron is another very good hotel right in the heart of things, and the Centrum as well. We have had great stays at all of these, plus a few a but further. We have not had any issue with noise at CHP, FWIW.

From the airport to Reykjavik, the Flybus is what many people take. It is around $39 pp each way. You don't need to reserve it as they leave when the bus fills, and they are there after every flight. They take you to the central bus terminal and from there you transfer to a smaller bus that is allowed to go into downtown and they stop around various bus stops. A taxi is an option as well, and one that we use most of the time if we are not renting a car. A taxi is about $150 US dollars each way, but it is door to door so it is very easy.

For day of arrival, you could do the BL and then head into Reykjavik, or do Sky Lagoon which is in Reykjavik. Both are good. For arrival day I highly recommend the Citywalk "free" walking tour (tip at the end). You can only book about a week in advance and it does sell out, so note it on the calendar if you are interested. The food tour is excellent as well. The is about 3 hours and there s plenty of food for lunch and dinner. You could also hit a local pool that evening.

For your open full day, I would skip the Golden Circle actually, and either do a full day tour to Snaefellsness or the south coast. Both are great and have much more to see than the GC does. They are longer tours though, but IMO, worth it.

Since your flight out is very early, you might consider heading back to KEF in the late evening and staying at the Aurora Hotel. It is literally a 5 minute walk across the parking lot to the terminal, and that would give you a bit more time to sleep in the morning.

I have stayed at the Center Hotel Laugevegur twice. I enjoyed both times especially since I got to see the Northern Lights from my balcony each time.

I struck out during my other visits to Iceland.

The Flybus hotel drop off and pick up is on the side of the hotel.

I would also second the Aurora Hotel at the airport for eary flights. The included breakfast, I believe, stars at 4 AM. Very basic but clean and convenient.

Frank brings up a good point. The bus stop for tours is right outside the door at both Center Hotel Laiugavegur as well as Center Hotel Midgardur. We have stayed at both of those a handful of times. For CHPlaza, you do need to walk just a few blocks, so about a 5 minute walk or so.

mikliz97, we are staying at the Center Hotel Midgardur and I didn’t realize the airport bus stops right there. Good to know! Thanks!

Mardee, it is directly across the street. We have stayed there a few times. BTW, Sundhollin is about a 2-3 block walk from the hotel and I love their rooftop hot tubs! There is also a really good food hall sort of kitty corner from the hotel.

I stayed at Center Hotel Plaza on an Icelandair stopover and it was just fine. Best hot shower I've had in a long time, though smelling faintly of eggs due to geothermal heat. Breakfast was fine and plentiful. The only loudness came from the person on the floor above me walking around on the hard wood floors, easily remedied by earplugs.

You didn't say if you're on your way to Europe or on the way home. If you're jetlagged that early morning arrival can be quite a drag, especially since check in time is not until 2 or 3 p.m. The hotel will store your bags but you'll need to prepare to entertain yourself for a few hours in the cold, so make sure your bags are packed such that you can access your coats and hats. It's a good 45 minutes from airport to hotel but you'll still have time to kill.

The layover doesn't offer much time to see a lot. If it were me I would spend the arrival day doing things in Reykjavik proper. Second day leave your bags with hotel, take a day tour to Golden Circle (use a small or big company), and then get your bags and take the bus to Blue Lagoon and then on to the airport hotel. Your morning departure needs an early arrival time to the airport especially if it's US bound flight. It's a small facility but things can go VERY slow at check in /security because a huge number of flights arrive in those early morning hours.
