10-day Itinerary & Lodging Questions

My husband and I are planning an Iceland trip in mid-May for 10 days. We don't want to do the whole Ring Road as we'd rather spend more time hiking and doing some boat/jeep tours rather than so much driving. I'd love some feedback on the proposed itinerary and also any suggestions folks have of places to stay along the South Coast and Snaefellsnes especially. Thanks!

Reykjanes Peninsula,

Sleep in Snaefellsnes Peninsula

Day 5

If you are flying in from the US, then don’t try to go the Reykjanes that day. Keeping the driving to a minimum on arrival day is wise.

After Vik, I would stay up around Jokulsarlon vs halfway.

Drive times are longer than what google maps says. So like from Diamond beach back to KEF I s a minimum of 6 hours drive time without any stops, but more likely you are looking at about 6.5 hours without stops.

Your basic itinerary is good. The areas you want to see in 10 days is not rushed and you will enjoy that.

I love Stikkisholmur on Snaefellsness for overnights. Look at Hotel Egilsen or Akkeri Guesthouse there. We have stayed at both and they are next door to each other. Both are great.

In the Golden Circle we have had good stays at Blue View Cabins and Arbakki Farmhouse. Plus a few homes but those were larger so probably not what you are looking for. Near Selfoss we have had a great stay at Eldhestar. We have also stayed at Efstidalur, but it is our least favorite place in all of our trips.

Around Vik we like the Volcano Hotel. We have also stayed at Giljur Guesthouse and it was fine but a bit more hostel like.

For Jokilsarlon we have never stayed right near it but rather up close to Hofn so about an hour away. We have had cottages in that area.
