1 day (evening to afternoon) itinerary and outerwear rental?

I will be having a stopover in Iceland in April. I've been before, and explored Reykjavik and done a tour of the South Coast. My flights get in at about 6:30pm and I leave the next day around 5pm.

I'm thinking of renting a car and doing highlights of the Golden Circle and/or going to a scenic spa outside of Reykjavik. I'm looking for recommendations on:
- timing of when to see Golden Circle sights, given that it'll need to be in the morning or the early afternoon
- where to stay overnight (open to anything on the less-expensive side as long as it has a private bath/shower)
- scenic spas or even particularly scenic public pools outside of Reykjavik
- other itineraries I should consider

My other question: has anyone had experience renting outerwear (coats, boots, etc.)? I'll be coming from Italy, and won't have a checked bag, so I may not have space to bring appropriate gear for my Iceland day.

I would not bother renting clothing. Layers work best here no matter what time of year.

Two places to check out for lagoons are Hvammsvik which is 45 minutes north of Reykjavik and Laugaras which is in the Golden Circle. We actually just left Hvammsvik a few minutes ago. It is our favorite lagoon/hot spring and we try to go on all of our trips. Laugaras is brand new. We are going there tomorrow. If you did that one you could easily incorporate the other GC sites. You will need to be back at KEF by 2pm so keep that in mind.

I look forward to your report on Laugaras, mikliz97. Always interested in new spas!

I don't have any specific recommendations other than to be sure you carefully calculate the travel times to the Golden Circle sites (I did a day tour that took over 8 hours, so that's my reference) and consider the amount of driving time back to the airport (45 minutes minimum from Reykjavik city center). April is still potentially yucky weather so that could add time.

I definitely advise getting to the airport 3 hours ahead of your flight home - the 2 p.m. suggestion from mikeliz is reasonable. It doesn't seem like you would need that much time but they squeeze a LOT of people through that place every day and it is pretty nutty. Recently some friends nearly missed their flight arriving 2 hours ahead thinking they had plenty of time.

And I also second the suggestion for layers. I was there in late October and was very thankful for my wind/waterproof outer layer - not heavy coat but definitely needed especially for the wind. A couple thin base layers won't take up too much space in your luggage and you'll be glad you have them.

I agree, and they don't even have to look good. I was in Germany one year and, towards the end of the trip, decided to go to Copenhagen. I had actually shipped my jacket home by that point because it was so warm and I didn't need it, plus I had overpacked anyway. Of course, what happened was that Copenhagen was quite chilly when I got there and I was very cold. I thought about buying something, but instead I just started wearing two to three tops at a time, and that actually worked well enough for me. They probably looked a little bit strange, but at that point I wasn't that concerned. 😂

One layer, though, that I always bring with me is a sweater/vest. I have been using one of them since my first trip to Iceland in 2018, and I swear by them. They are great because they will keep you warm if it's not too cold, and they give you much more mobility than wearing a jacket. They usually have deep pockets for phones, keys, and other items and are so practical. Right now I have one that I got from LL Bean that I really like, but I've also bought them in the past from Orvis, which has a good selection.

Gail—we went to Laugarás today and it was so good!!! Oh my gosh we were blown away! Snow was falling heavily which added to the atmosphere. Everything was top notch and you could tell a lot of thought were into every aspect.

Weather here the last 4 days has been cold with a lot of wind/snow/sleet/hail and I have been perfectly warm in a long sleeve merino wool shirt, my wool sweater and Arcteryx waterproof rain jacket.
