My husband and I will visit Iceland in early June. We arrive late afternoon, we are pleasantly older, and don’t like starting long drives at that time. We’re heading up the South Coast, eventually toward Vik. We are considering staying near Selfoss for the first night, rather than Reykjavík (going there later). Any suggestions for hotels/guesthouses in the Selfoss area? Thanks
We have never stayed super close to Selfoss. If you don't mind about 30 minutes away, take a look at Blue View Cabins. We stayed there for one night on our most recent trip and loved it. You didn't ask, but two restaurants in Selfoss that we love are Messinn which is right in downtown and really good for lunch or dinner, and then Ingolfsskali just outside of town for dinner.
Hotel Geysir is right near the geysir (i.e. Golden Circle). It was by far the best hotel we stayed at over our two weeks in Iceland (I think 8 hotels/inns/guesthouses). Note that it is probably the most "American" type hotel we stayed at. So it isn't for people who want a quaint hotel. However, by the end of our trip we were dying for a 'normal' hotel with a bit more space to move around. I found the beds to be the most comfortable I've maybe ever slept on. I thought the restaurant was great----it was one of our 'treat' meals on the trip. The breakfast (either we got it for free or paid extra on the room) was really expensive and again was more "American" than most of our hotels, but they did have some traditional Iceland food. And, again, we were on the back of the trip and wanted some normal. And the price was very reasonable considering how expensive most hotels are in Iceland. I'd compare it to a higher end Marriott.
