I am familiar with the Trenitalia rail system, but this will be our first venture outside of Italy. What is the best way to get to Budapest from Venice? Rail? Airplane? Other suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Its at least an 11 hour train journey, so I'd opt for a flight if you can.
Ryanair flies direct Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from Treviso. Otherwise connecting flights. Lufthansa has the fastest in under 4 hours, Air Serbia is the cheapest.

And Treviso is reported to be quite a nice city. I haven't managed to get there yet.
