While Budapest is a contender , I need opinions. Last year 4 couples, all over 65 spent 5 nights in Sorrento and all loved it as a wonderful base. I put the trip together and am now looking for a repeat this September. Any ideas? I have traveled extensively but as a couple or family. The bar is set too high after Sorrento. Help please!!
You might post this under "general Europe" and provide a bit more information to get relevant responses other than just about Budapest (as it is posted in the Hungary forum, some people may not see it). What are your interests (e.g., museums, nature, hiking)? How active are you? Does anyone have mobility issues? Will you have a car? Do you want to do day trips or be entertained in place? How long are you staying?
Perhaps if you provide more specific details about what about Sorrento appealed to you, people can respond with suggestions that reflect your group's interest and not just where they would go.
Have you asked any or all of the other members if your group for their wish lists or suggestions?
Well, without knowing anything about you or what you liked in Sorrento, its hard to be specific. I havent been to Sorrento in 20 years but I will try and remember......
Hungary doesnt have a coast.
The architecture is more Vienna (but more beautiful) than Italy
It 10x larger than Sorrento
No shortage of good food and memorable dining experiences.
The wine is as good as Italian wine.
The people I think are a bit kinder than the typical tourist town Italian.
The cost here will be 20 to 40% less than Sorrento but if you want to spend the same you can go 5 star all the way.
Theater and music in Budapest is extrodinarily good as are the venues. From Jazz to Broadway to Opera. Something thats lacking in Sorrento.

Sorrento use to be, maybe still is, popular among certain types. Budapest has become sort of popular for Hollywood types. They come to make movies (movies are huge business here now).
Will Smith: A frequent visitor who has called the city a "jewel box". He famously celebrated his 50th birthday there, performing a "Father Drake" dance challenge on top of the Chain Bridge.
Tom Hanks: While filming Inferno, Hanks compared Budapest's beauty to his hometown of San Francisco. He was particularly impressed by the city's safety and stunning night-time illumination.
Anthony Hopkins: He once described Budapest as "the most beautiful place I had ever been" after a visit where he explored St. Stephen’s Basilica and the Chain Bridge on foot.
Jeremy Irons: A regular in the city (notably for The Borgias), he has praised it as an "amazingly friendly and efficient city"
Johnny Depp: During the 2023 filming of Modi, Depp was frequently spotted engaging with fans and reportedly formed a strong bond with his local Hungarian film crew.
Angelina Jolie: bought a home near Lake Balaton.
Morgan Freeman: Spotted multiple times in 2024 while filming Now You See Me 3, he became a regular at the stylish Déryné restaurant in the 1st district.
Keanu Reeves: Visiting in 2025 for The Entertainment System is Down, Reeves was seen exploring downtown on foot and dining at local Mexican spots like Casa Mexa.
