Trip Report- USA Family August 2026

I like to give back to forums I learned from by posting travel reports.

This was the first leg of a 10 day (Budapest/Vienna/Prague train voyage) as a mom and two kids (20 and 17). This was my first time to Budapest since my only visit in 2004 and we devoted the largest time to this stay. Both kids have decided it was their favorite city and would hope to return.

We were delayed due to a initial hiccup of a delayed flight (5+ hours) from the US to Munich. Bouncing back from this, our family arrived late in the afternoon on Sunday and took the Airport 100E into the city. I appreciate that the signage was good to find the bus and no time was wasted finding it. We purchased the tickets in advance on the app and it was an easy and inexpensive journey. That night we just walked around the area from Liberty bridge to the Chain bridge enjoying the atmosphere. The next morning we bought 72 hour passes so we did not have to think about transport logistics. I would recommend the city's excellent and inexpensive transportation system and it was one of things that impressed my kids the most. We were stopped for validation a few times at metro exits and never on buses or trams other than when entering the 100E bus.

I was extremely happy with Hotel Memories in the 5th district which was 2 minutes by foot off the 100E stop at Kálvin tér. We had an attractive triple room at a good price and it included an excellent breakfast buffet. The staff were polite and professional. There was a skybar which we did not visit but could have booked there dinner to watch the fireworks. My kiddo enjoyed the hot tub in the basement next to the historical city wall. I found the area around the hotel nice for dining, sightseeing and transportation access and general wandering/people watching. I did not feel that we were in an inconvenient place for sightseeing. Again, another recommend.

Our late arrive meant we could not do our planned Pest walking tour on our arrival night and generally we had a fairly loose itinerary with only a few fixed items. We ultimately rebooked the free walking tour and did another one on the Buda side, visited the Central Market at different times of day to see what was open, walked Gellért hill, and two of us went to the Rudas bath and soaked in discounted end of day rates (same as student rate all day). The kids thought the wax figures at the Hospital on the Rock were both weird, creepy and hysterical. I thought the tour was fine but kind of rushed. We enjoyed a prebooked small group cooking class where we made Chicken Paprika and a mushroom version for my vegetarian kiddo. Happy to share the vendor info to anyone interested. Other food highlights were the chimney cakes cooked on coals at the Jewish Quarter karavan, langos of different varieties, sour cherry strugels, and food market at Fisherman's Bastion on August 20th where we ate delicious potato pancakes, sausages and other delights. We chose to visit the interior of Parliament on August 19th and avoided the crowds vying for free entry on the 20th and enjoyed watching preparations for the holiday in the city in and around that day. This included our River Cruise where we got a preview of the following night's incredible projection.

My one grave disappointment was my kids's choice to visit the Zoo on the 20th on the one truly hot day of our visit. The animals were snoozing in the shade and it truly was uncomfortable. I tried to encourage a visit to the free and air conditioned museums afterwards but sadly no they were not interested. We instead did laundry in the afternoon so we had sweat free clothing to visit the Folk art event in the Buda castle area. We also did not see the fireworks. We were at the Liberty bridge end of things and enjoying the atmosphere but I didn't have it in us to wait. Maybe a miss on my part.
Our final morning was an easy metro ride to the Kelenföld railway station to take our RJ train to Vienna.

Well that sounds like a successful visit! Budapest is such a great place for keeping an itinerary flexible. And you got to enjoy some of the events of the holiday, even if you missed the fireworks. Thanks for the mention of the rooftop you could have reserved to watch from. Getting there for that is still on my list - and possibly that’s the time for a hotel stay instead of my normal apartment stay.

Edit: and I have passed the above post on for review since it’s a blog promo and appears to be AI also.

jennifer - thanks for coming back to share about your trip. Looks like a great stay in Budapest, and how fun that your two kids enjoyed it the most. I'm super excited about it as I'll be visiting Budapest for first time in a couple of weeks. Unfortunately, only 3 days. I chuckled at your comment about the Hospital on the Rocks - it's on my wish list depending on timing.

Did you buy your 72 hour pass through the app or did you get a print ticket/pass? I read somewhere that you need to validate if it's on the app but not if hard copy.

Thanks for the trip report, Jennifer! I enjoyed reading it and it brought back some good memories! And like Joy, I laughed at your kids' reaction to Hospital on the Rock! I have not made it there there, but hopefully next time.

Just curious if you ever considered letting your kids see the zoo and you visit the museums? Sometimes it can be nice for groups with different tastes to branch off, and your kids sound old enough to go off on their own. And that way you would have had your nice air-conditioned museum visit. 😊

Regardless, I'm glad you enjoyed Budapest—it really is a wonderful city!

Joy, a paper travelcard you can tuck in your wallet and leave it unless asked to show it. You will buy that upon arrival. With a travelcard in the app on your phone, apparently you still need to scan the qr code at the entrance of the metro station or on the side of the tram (just when you board). That gives you a funny graphic, which you show if asked. You can pre-purchase in the app up to 30 days before you need it and give the start date.

After I validated it the first time, I didn't seem to need to do anything 72 hour pass(es) on the app. The app showed it was valid and end date. When I went up to an inspector at the metro exit I had to press an icon that showed the appropriate picture and it worked.

I actually wanted to visit the zoo too- I had fond memories of watching the hippos there with my husband. I just wished it wasn't so hot. The 20 year old went off by herself a fair bit. The 17 year old's tram pass was with me and she didn't have an e-sim so she tended to not stray too far from me.

jennifer_kratovil, I think you handled the pass correctly. In tge zoo did you find the hippo house? Shame it was a hot day as its apretty good zoo under tge right circumstances.

Glad you enjoyed the trip.

Yes we did! and took a few videos of them too. And I just noticed I got the name of our hotel wrong in my OP and have updated it.

Thanks everyone for answering my question about the transportation pass!

Three questions.
The name of the cooking class?
Since you left from Kelenfold I am guessing a RegioJet train. What did you think of the RegioJet train and service?
Any restaurants that stick out in your mind?

  • The name of the cooking class was the 2.5 hour Hungarian Cooking class offered by Flavors of Budapest.

  • RegioJet train was a sh*t show. They cancelled our 2nd class coach because A/C not working and rebooked us in another comparable one splitting my family up. Apparently a number of people were displaced and scrambling over each other for the same seats. I had one fancy woman demand I leave my seat because she thought my 2nd class 1st car was her first class car. I suggested she find someone to help her and it displeased her and her family greatly. A Czech woman behind me came to my rescue. After all that the A/C really didn't work in this coach either.

    • The kids and I aren't really high brow and besides the food market, they enjoyed Langos and Beer at 1052 Budapest, Bécsi utca 2 and a cafe Rojt es Bojt on the stairs near Hospital in the Rock.

I forgot. Thanks about RegioJet. I sort of worried about that sort of thing. It always sounded too good to be true.

For the cooking I was hoping you had met Agnes. She runs cooking lessons out of her home kitchen. Wonderful lady. Its called Culinary Hungary.

Thank you so much for sharing all of this. We are headed there in November and I am ironing out all the details now. May I ask who you booked the walking tours with?

  • Pest tour was with Walks With Andor but booked via Free Tours.com. https://walkswithandor.com The girls liked him a lot. Very good sense of humor and kept everyone moving and held their interest.

-Buda tour was https://www.triptobudapest.hu/tour/free-buda-castle-tour/ I liked this tour but the kids got a bit edgy that there was a fair bit of sitting and looking at photos before walking up to the castle area. The guide was pleasant, local but "Save all questions for the end please."
