travel from Budapest to Slovenia

We will be travelling to Budapest in early June and spending 3 days having fun there. We will then travel to Slovenia for 10 days, returning to Budapest for our flight home. While in Slovenia, we intend to rent a car. Our research shows us that it is cheaper to rent a car in Slovenia than in Hungary. We are now thinking of taking a train from Budapest to Maribor and renting our car there, returning it to Maribor and taking the train back to Budapest. Again our research shows that there is a non stop train from Budapest to Maribor that takes about 6 hours but we cannot find the cost. So is it really cheaper to rent a car in Slovenia, how can we get more information about the train, does anyone know anything about Izzirent. Thanks any information would be helpful.

That sure is an interesting problem. I worked it from every angle and I could only get a quote from Rail Europe for USD119 but they mark up prices very heavily so that doesn't mean much. I would call MAV and ask: "For timetable and booking please call the MÁVDIREKT Customer Service: International: +36 (1) 444 44 99 Domestic: 06 (40) 49 49 49" Come back and let me know what you find out. I would be very interested.

Good luck.

Thanks, James. We have decided to forget about the train and rent a car in Budapest for our time in Hungary and Slovenia. Have you had any experiences with car rentals in Budapest? Have you ever heard of izzierent? It appeared on another forum.

I have a confession to make. I have been to places as diverse as the UK, Honduras, Russia, Egypt and Canada but i have only driven a car once and that was a disaster in South Africa. Cant help you with that one.
