Hello. Just wondered we are over 65 and are buses, trams free to ride. I read where they are in Prague. I forgot to ask this on my first post. Thank you.
I am over 65 and was told they are free. I did not buy any tickets for the tram or subway. However, I never encountered a ticket inspector. I was in Budapest in October 2024.
Hi. Yes, we were just there, and yes, all public transit in Hungary is free for over 65, including bus 100 from the Budapest airport into the city. There are no gates or turnstiles in the metro, but ticket checkers in the metro stations were very common, probably on about 1/3 of our rides. They have the option of asking for ID for anyone claiming to be over 65, but none ever did (to my wife's chagrin); we just smiled at them and they either ignored us or waived us thru. Enjoy!
Again thank you for the info
Unlike most senior discounts in town that only apply to EU citizens, this is indeed for everyone. Any ID will work. After a few years, I finally got asked. I hugged the inspector. While carrying a passport is the law, you can put that down deep someplace and just have a drivers license handy if asked.
Be aware if you do break the rules, you will be fined. There is no talking your way out of it. And its expensive. But your fines are important, they subsidize us old farts.
