Train from Vienna to Budapest

I'm seeking suggestions on train travel. Will be taking the train into Budapest on December 24th. About 50% of our travels to european countries, we have little to no difficulty using the trains. However, other times we have encountered inability to find correct or accurate time schedules, which track to get the train on, ticket purchasing... Very frustrating. Would it be best to discuss this with the concierge at our Vienna hotel? or use the app?

Also trying to decide whether to purchase a city pass in both cities for using public transportation. I think in Vienna since we aren't EU citizens we would pay even though we are both 70 yrs old. And if I'm understanding Hungary's system, we would not have to pay because of our age.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as always!

Go to the MAV rail site and buy your tickets. Pretty easy actually but if you need help we could do a WhatsApp video call and walk through it together. Why MAV and not OBB? MAV is usually cheaper. https://jegy.mav.hu/

Trains are at 6:40 am and every hour after all day. MAV fares are 20 to 30 euro plus 2 more for a seat assignment.

Try and come on the 23rd, even late on the 23rd if you can.

No city pass required in Budapest. Public transportation is free if you are over 65. Nothing to buy. Just show a picture ID if you are asked.
