Thanks for all the info - trip plans

Landing in BUD next Wednesday, leaving with AMA Waterways the following Monday for a week to Bucharest. Based on all the excellent information here, we've booked / planned:

  • St. Andrea Skybar wine tasting; Hoppa Bistro dinner
  • Walking food tour (4 hrs); open for dinner depending on how hungry we are
  • TimeOut market for dinner (reservations)
  • Etyek wine tour (4 hours); reservations for dinner at N28
  • MotoGP race at Balaton Park!

We'll fill in with site seeing and we LOVE to walk so plan on covering a lot of ground. Will get a month BKK pass as we've got one night back in BUD after we spend a week in Romania after the cruise; we love airport express buses. Staying at an Air B&B owned by a friend located near Boráros tér (Jolly Pub is our landmark).

I'm 58 and will be wearing shorts, but will also have a blazer for N28 and dinners on the cruise!

We're very excited about our first visit to Hungary!

St. Andrea Skybar wine tasting; Hoppa Bistro dinner

If you see a very, very tall waiter with excellent English, tell him I say hello. I will PM you his name. He will be so impressed you might see a little personal service. Or get thrown out.

These are great. Have a blast. Be sure and come back and let us know where you went and what you thought.

TimeOut market for dinner (reservations)

I enjoy the place, but you realize its a sort of Michelin Star infused food court? I will be there for luch today. You will find just normal Hungarian folks out doing their thing. What day of the week? Cause they do different things, music, etc on different nights.

Etyek wine tour (4 hours);

Yes, yes, yes! Great idea. Who did you book it with. Do a review.

reservations for dinner at N28

Sort of mid-50 to early 60 gentleman that acts a bit like the manager (not sure his title), if you get a chance ask him for a wine recommendation then sit back and enjoy the conversation.

MotoGP race at Balaton Park!

That ought be a blast. This one you have to post a review on for sure.

Dont know about the cruise. Never been on one.

At N28 you probably won't be the only one with a blazer, but I suspect if there are others they will be Hungarian (or me). If you showed up with just a collard shirt and decent pants you would fit in. Its about location. If you went to Faust out in Buda where 95% of the clients are Hungarian most of the gentlemen will be in suits or blazers or sports coats; but you could still pull off somethig less if it has some style.

For the shorts, no worries. Hungarian gentlemen over 35 generally dont wear them in town but no one will care. Hungarian are pretty secure in their cultural norms despite what the tourists do.

Sounds fun! The Sky Bar is pretty and Time Out is nice (casual but unique). You have done good research! I arrive tomorrow night and will be there till the 7th.

Romania is wonderful also!

I missed the Hoppá! Bistro. [Hoppá! = Oops!]. Never been. Make sure you have reservations as I imagine, because of the location, it books fast. Not cheap, but in the Michelin Guide so I presume very good. Have a wine with dinner, but then save your wine appetite for places with a larger selection at better prices. I'll put a link to one in the same general area at the end of this. On the menu if you want to do something uniquely Hungarian go for the Mangalitsa pork. It's hairy Hungarian Wagu pig. Excellent.

I sent you a PM with more.

And if you have trouble with a reservation at Hoppa!, consider Faust. Sounds like your sort of place.
