Tentative Agenda Budapest Nov 23-27, your thoughts?

Ok, here's our tentative itinerary, looking for thoughts, holes, things we haven't considered.

-We have some restaurants in mind but not enough.

- We will visit the two big Christmas markets probably but they're not our main objective, as we have Germany and Austria after Hungary. I heard there were a couple smaller more local Christmas markets (Obuda and some other town centre north of the main tourist area) but I can't find any evidence that they're open this early.
- Note I have visited Budapest in 2018, but dh has never been.

- One concern I have is keeping dh from TOO much walking, especially stairs. Would love best ideas on how to manage Fisherman's Bastion and Castle Hill with that restriction.
- I've seen the Parliament and dh doesn't really care if we do or not, so as it can be hard to book, views from the outside will be fine.
- Hunyadi market is quite close to our hotel and seems like a good bet. We would also love to incorporate other local markets if it makes sense. Will go to the Great Market to look around but probably not much more.
- Bath time. I want to go to Széchenyi for the vibe but maybe early morning when it's quiet? Could be convinced to do a different bath (or maybe a second visit elsewhere) but as it's our first visit to a bath, I'm hoping for the "classic" experience, not suburban moms and utilitarian buildings even if they're cheaper.
- I found Momento park fascinating but I don't think we have time, and it would be highly dependent on decent weather.
- Laundry. We will need to do it before we leave the city. I believe the hotel has 1 shared set of machines, which may or may not be enough.

Will post the details in a second post, I put in too many line breaks and the editor doesn't like it. :)

Joanne, you have done your research, so I don’t think you should have any worries about the details of what you want to see. But here are a few thoughts (which could be entirely wrong).

Nov 23: there are a couple of Spars close to you for picking up tea and breakfast. But check closing time - it may be 8pm (so maybe shopping before dinner). They will have wine but if you want some for the hotel, maybe buy it at a wine bar or wine store the following day. It doesn’t hurt anything to make a reservation for Menza a couple of days in advance (just before you leave and are fairly sure about flights, etc.) just so you know you have a place to eat upon arrival.

Nov 24: Karavan is a fun place to eat, but seems out of the way for your other planning. And Nov. weather might be great or not great. I wouldn’t put it high on the list.

Nov. 26: I really enjoyed the Tasting Table, but made the mistake of having a light lunch (soup and small dessert) an hour beforehand at New York Cafe. Too much food!!

Nov 27: You could try Ruszwurm Confectionery in the Castle area for pastries. :)

I’m not offering any comments on activities and order, because most of this you don’t have to commit to way ahead. So you can see what you feel like when you feel like it. And since the trams and busses feel like sightseeing for me, it never feels like wasted time even if it’s not the most orderly.

For restaurants, if there is somewhere you specifically care about, a reservation doesn’t hurt. I am solo and have only been turned away as a walk up once. But I wouldn’t count on that.

And I am sure you know you can buy your 100E bus ticket through the BudapestGo app, as well as your pass. The app works as long as you have data. But with the changes in who is free, I haven’t used the app since Oct. 2023.

Do keep in mind that I am not correct about much, just opinionated as ..... well, you know. Most important thing is to relax and enjoy and try to remember the places in between. Take it slow, plenty of places to sit and rest.

Ohhhhh, almost forgot. For breakfast I want to tell you to try Stika Gastropub, but it can be a bit hard to get into, especially in the winter. But if you are close, check. Its only open till about 3pm. Palinka spiked rasberry lemonaid.

Oh and for a decent meal lunch or a beer with the locals, right out in front of your hotel is Kiadó Kocsma (the name literally means pub for rent).

Saturday November 23 arrival day
• Dinner at Menza add info. Do we need a reservation?
A reservation would be a good idea. Gotta be honest, not one of my favorite places. If that doesnt work out, consider Pörc & Prézli Étterem or Cork Wine and Breakfast (open till 11pm doespite the name) both easily accessible from your hotel ( I know you will be tired)
• Short orientation walk?
Maybe short partial M1 / partial Walk up Andrassy ut. Its nice in the evening. Run up to Heores square on the M1, all lit up, then take the M1 back to Vorosmarty utca and walk from there? (Vorosmarty utca not Vorsomarty ter)
• Look for an open grocery, pick up breakfast, tea, wine, etc
There is a nice, one of the larger, Spar on the 4/6 line just around the corner from your hotel https://maps.app.goo.gl/8Jk9zU8Nj4sVRw3c9

Sunday Nov 24
• Cafes/markets/Street food Café Muvesz
On Andrassy ut there are a few nice restaurants. Not the same history, as the Muvesz, but maybe better food. I like SZÉK Restaurant & Bar but granted not the same mystique. So you cant go wrong either way.
• Lunch Eat lunch at Karavan, maybe an early drink at Ruin pubs add location
As long as you know this is a pretty long haul from Andrassy ut.
• Dinner Hungarian restaurant
Because of where you are in District VII, and because it is really good, think about Macesz Bistro

Monday Nov 25.
• Cafes/markets/Street food Hunyadi Market Central Café
You are jumping around a bit. The Huyandi Market is interesting because you are so close, and you have the time to get off the tourist route a bit. That’s good. But now the Central Café is a very long haul. Then back to the Szechenyi Baths is yet another long haul But iff you choose the Klauzál Market Hall for your “local” market, Mazel Tov Restaurant is right behind it and its wonderful and very architecturally unique.
• Activities Széchenyi Bath, Heroes’ Square
• Walk around St Stephen’s, see light show at Basilica Christmas market
That works thanks to you staying on the M1 line.
• Boat tour after dark, Legenda tours
Always nice.
• Lunch/Dinner Rosenstein Vendiglo (need reservation), other?
I would love to know what book you got these restaurants out of. Take a taxi if you go, sure you can use public transport but its not direct and take a change or two or a bit of a walk. I’m not sure if it still lives up to its reputation. But you know what, if its on your list of interests go and have a blast. So much is attitude that you really cant do wrong. But if you aren’t sold on it, for just a darn good experience I would go to N28 since you will be in the area.

Tuesday Nov 26
• York Palace or Gerbaud
NY Palace gets my vote.
• Activities Doheny Synagogue tour
Yes, outstanding. After the NY Palace, walk up the road to Blaha Lujza tér and take the M2 metro to Astoria (1 stop), now you are maybe 200 m from the Synagogue.
• Tasting Table wine tasting 3 pm
Never been. Let me know how it works out.
• Great Market or Obuda Christmas market or similar
Great Market Hall
• Dinner ?
DunaCorso, or Rézkakas Bistro or Opus Jazz or Borbíróság

You might be surprised when you check in at the Medosz—last May I booked through Expedia and thought breakfast was extra so I skipped it, but upon check-in was told it was included and I was happy because they do offer an excellent spread.

Yes, check with the Medosz. My husband and I are booked there for mid-December and our breakfast is included.

i missed a few things:

  • One concern I have is keeping dh from TOO much walking, especially stairs. Would love best ideas on how to manage Fisherman's Bastion and Castle Hill with that restriction.

The 16 bus from Deak Ferenc ter to the castle hill area. The castle hill area is flat with only a very few exceptions.

  • Laundry. We will need to do it before we leave the city. I believe the hotel has 1 shared set of machines, which may or may not be enough.

Right behind your hotel: https://maps.app.goo.gl/ryoN4BpKc9Dgp73K8

A bit further, but they will do it for you: https://maps.app.goo.gl/vLduuhqRp3fCwonZ6

  • We will visit the two big Christmas markets probably but they're not our main objective, as we have Germany and Austria after Hungary. I heard there were a couple smaller more local Christmas markets (Obuda and some other town centre north of the main tourist area) but I can't find any evidence that they're open this early.

Szentendre and Obuda have both opened on 1 December in previous years.

The Györ market began on 26 November last year and I think that woud be 24 Novmber this year. So that is probably an option. And to visit Györ and Pannonhalma is an excellent idea at Christmas. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtYrIIZJVEM

The Vác market also began on 26 November last year so probably 24 November this year: https://youtu.be/_5j7TLWWrOM?si=O5LL4KYbItgbpRNA

Good restaurant is Vig Varyu etterem at Vigado ter 2 -- next to the Vigado Concert Hall. Very nice, good food, reasonable prices.
The 100E app for tickets works (I was in B in May) and there were even ambassadors at the stop at Kalvin ter to answer questions.
