Taking the train from Budapest to Egers?

We need to take the train from Budapest to Egers on a Sunday morning returning to Budapest on a Tuesday morning in order to get to the airport to catch our plane back to the US. First, do the trains tend to be on time or should we allow a fair amount of extra time in the schedule to be sure we arrive on time? Would it be better to take a bus?

Also, the Rick Steves' Budapest book says that Eger is connected to the nearby junction town of Fuzesabony by frequent InterCity (speedier) trains (13/day, 17 minutes.) Would it be better to take this faster train to Fuzesabony and then transfer to the Egers local train?

The town is EGER with no "s". The non-stop train from Budapest Keleti Station takes as little as 1:50 and I don't think you can get to Eger faster by any other means; except maybe a fast car. http://elvira.mav-start.hu/elvira.dll/xslvzs/uf All the trains I have been on in Hungary have been on time. You do need to plan the trip to get you to Budapest at least 2.5 hours prior to the flight time; me, I would time it 3 hours prior to flight time because I just don't like the crush of bodies when you arrive too late. The airport is nice but the lines tend to be a little disorganized. When you arrive back in Keleti station, as the train pulls in, call City Taxi ( +36 1 211 1111 ) and they will have a car waiting for you out the south doors of the station at the drop off / pick up loop on Kerepesi ut near the Chinese Restaurant. http://www.mav-start.hu/res/keleti_attekinto_terkep_1.pdf Don't use any of the taxis waiting, only use a taxi you have called. This will save you a bunch of money. If traffic is "normal" you will be at the airport in 30 to 40 minutes.

Glad I could help a little. Let me know if you need anything else. Oh, but there is construction going on in the town center right now. Not sure when it will be complete. Unless you know the work is complete, as beautiful a town as it is, it would not be my first choice until the work is done.
