Szentendre and Open Air Museum

Is it possible to take the train to Szentendre, tour the sights there, and then take that bus that Rick mentions to visit the Open Air Museum all in one day? I also would be interested in taking the boat back as others have reported doing.

Am I allowing myself enough time to thoroughly enjoy the town and then the open air museum?

I am willing to take the last bus back to Szentendre, but I don't know if I am allowing myself enough time to catch the boat and/or the train back to Budapest as I don't have departure times.

YES, plenty of time if you get a good start in the morning.

Budapest to Szentendre: Take the M2 Metro to Batthyány tér on the Buda site. Then look for the HEV sign (Interlocal / Commuter Train Company) and buy a ticket on the H5 Interlocal train to Szentendre. Takes about 45 minutes to reach Szentendre. Trains run about every 10 to 20 minutes. http://www.bkk.hu/en/timetables/

From the train station it is about a 15 minute walk to the old town center. Basically due north, but bring a map. Very easy. http://goo.gl/maps/iNXlp

Skanzen (Open-Air Ethnographical Museum): Stumped! I have never been there, but I did find their English site with the bus schedules, etc: http://skanzen.hu/index.php?fm=article&id=119

Then from the dock (right out in front of the old town center, you cant possibly not find it) you can take the afternoon boat back to Budapest. I really enjoy this. Seeing Budapest grow before you as you enter on the river is pretty spectacular. http://www.mahartpassnave.hu/webset32.cgi?MAHART@@EN@@115@@GOOGLEBOT

Thank you for all the great information. The open air museum sent me details so I think we can do it, but it will be a very tight schedule.

I don't think it's that tight. Get an 8 am train to szentendre as little opens before 9am. Eat lunch in Szentendre, pick up your boat ticket and then go see the village. Me, I would take a taxi back, straight to the boat dock. You want to be there maybe 30 min prior to departure.
