Hi all. I swore that I read somewhere that there was a free shuttle up to the Buda castle area from a central area -- did I make this up? Does anyone know what I am talking about?
Its free if you have a metro pass. Use bus 16 or 16A or 116. No pass? Will cost your 450ft. ($1.25) Leaves from Deak Ferenc ter (and other stops).
Do you have to buy them ahead or can you pay on the bus like in the UK?
Some busses now have a tap card system, but I'm almost certain not these. There are machines at almost every metro and tram stop to buy tickets and TravelCards.
But if you are going to be here 2 days or more you really need a TravelCard or you will spend too much.
A ticket up and back will be a total of 900ft ($2.50), but for 2500ft you can travel all you want for 24 hours ($7) or 5500ft for 72 hours ($15)
great info! thanks!
Is it true that people over 65 years travel free with picture id on public transportation in Budapest?
Yes, except for the Funicular and the airport shuttle. I do it every day.
A picture ID with your birth date on it.
But they never really look at it. I guess I just look old.
Got a tad worried a few weeks ago, because this is new for non-EU, https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/hungary/if-you-are-over-65-buy-nothing-you-ride-for-free But confirmed and reconfirmed through use .... even today (last post on the link)
Actually, according to officials 2 weeks ago, the 100E bus to and from the airport is also included if you are over 65..
Thats right, you told me that. But dont count on the funicular. But I bet the cog railway is covered. And the commutter trains to the border of the BKK service area, so about a third of the way to Szentendre.
