Should I rent a car for a visit to Lillafüred?

Hello. We'll be visiting Vienna, Slovakia and Hungary and renting a car during our visit to Slovakia. Our visit to Hungary includes two full days in the Lillafüred area, where my wife has a family history, and then three full days in Budapest (also partial days for travel). Currently, our plan was to rent in Bratislava for our visit around Slovakia and return the car to Košice and take the train and buses to Lillafüred, where we're staying at the Hotel Palota. It looks like it's possible to take public transportation to the sites we're most interested in but at the sacrifice of time. Would anyone recommend keeping the rental and return it on arrival in Budapest instead? The price is almost double (so nearly 500 USD), which is not insignificant compared to our travel expenses. We're arriving in the Lillafüred on a Saturday, so the rental places in Miskolc are closed.

Thank you!

If you are going to use a car around Lillafüred for those places you can't get to easily on public transportation and for that it will cost $500 plus gas plus parking plus tolls ..... I think i would use a taxi.

Looks like you are looking at balancing cost versus time. Another option might be backtracking from Lillafured to return the car In Kocise after visiting Lilliafured and then taking the train to Budapest. I suspect, as Mr. É says, taxis around Lillafured would be your better option. It is also possible the hotel could help with a driver for a day, at a cost less than returning the car in Budapest (just brainstorming - no knowledge).

TTM, M & S took the train to Miskolc, then a taxi to the Palota Hotel. They said the taxi was only a few euro. So I figure the fares there are reasonable. CityTaxi in Budapest used to have daily fares, maybe still does. The taxi in Miskolc may also.

Thank you for the swift replies and advice everyone! Somehow I'd forgotten taxis as an option.
