We are staying at a hotel near the Opera House We are pensioners . can anyone suggest reasonably price restaurants within say a 10 minute or so walk from there not necessarily a tourist one Just some idea what should we expect as an average to pay for a meal without drinks. Do all restaurants accept credit cards
All restaurants accept credit cards.
"Reasonably priced"? LOL, today or 5 years ago???
Restaurants are less expensive here than in the UK.
I will send you a Private Message wiht a link to a list of cheaper eats in that area of town.
Your hotel is in District VI, so when ever districts are discussed that will help you. But you are only a few blocks from District VII so restaurants there are an option. I sent you a link to a list. Go to the restaurant websites and check the prices.
annemargaret, YES! And Szek is an anomaly on Andrassy ut. Great prices, especially at lunch. Great atmosphere and very, very good food.

For a sweet breakfast or a treat I can highly recommend the Strudel Garden Cafe and Bakery at Hajos u. 24. It's quute close to the back side of the Opera House. They have seating, but I just stopped in for a carryout strudel every day. I don't remember the cost in forint, but last year it amounted to less than $3 US--maybe closer to $2.
I tried many different types of their strudel; all were excellent. Offerings vary--they have dozens of types in their repertoire, but maybe only 10-15 on any given day. However, I'm nearly certain they always have apple strudel.
I saw people with coffee cups but never looked at the menu to see what was on offer beyond the wonderful strudel.
Part of the problem in helpig is what is "reasonable price"? And what do you expect for it.
acraven's suggestion is excellent. An Americano coffee will cost you a tad more than 1£ and a piece of strudle will cost you about twice that. Is that reasonable?
At Regős Vendéglő or Szek a three course lunch will cost about 7.50£, but they both have a cheaper 2 course fixed price. Reasonable? No idea.
At Bográcsgulyás terasz / Kessel Gulyás Garden you can get out for about 10£, but you might be fortunate enough to be able to enjoy the live music on the patio. So 7.50£ for food and 2.50£ for entertainment.
AND, Ferdinánd Monarchia Étterem has 2 and 3 course lunch menus for a little less than those above. https://ferdi.hu/

I stopped in at Cork Breakfast and Wine for a late dinner after attending a performance at the opera house. They were quite accommodating considering the late hour. Don't let the name put you off - much more than breakfast on the menu.
And owned by some great Ukrainian kids ... which explains some of the menu options. They have some tables with a remarkable night time view of the Basilica.
Sorry. But you guys keep hitting on my favorites.
