Questions about which Danube Bend town to visit and best time for evening Legenda cruise

Hello,
We (my husband and I) will be in Budapest for 5 nights for the first time from September 23 through September 27. We are interested in taking a Legenda cruise in the evening. I know my question is subjective but I'm curious if people think a sunset cruise would be nicer, or after the sun has set when illuminated Budapest might be more impressive. Do you think it's necessary to book tickets in advance?

We may want to visit one of the Danube Bend towns during our stay. I am having trouble deciding which town would be the nicer town and most rewarding to visit. We enjoy exploring new places, just wandering around, and like places with old world charm. We like art museums and history museums but probably wouldn't spend a lot of time in them on a daytrip. We like castles and palaces. Thinking of Szentendre or Visegrad. Is Esztergom too far away for a comfortable day trip?

Appreciate hearing from people about their experiences and personal preferences.
Thanks,
Karen

The cruise If it is a clear sunny September day there is some chance that being in that glass boat will be a bit like being in a greenhouse and you get steamed. I took a day trip one time and that was the result but can’t remember the month. Most of what you can see in the daytime from the boat you can see in the daytime from the trams. Or if you want there are some very affordable government run (BKK) river boats you can take during the day. The view of the buildings from the river at night though is a wonderful thing. I would do the well after sunset cruise. It’s never necessary to book tickets in advance. Well, not until you get to town and find out something big was going on in town that you didn’t know about, and the ship is sold out.

The Danube Bend towns to visit depend on you, how you want to travel and how much energy you have and how long a day trip you want vs how much more there is to see in Budapest.

I did all three with a private guide 23 years ago. It took over 12 hours, didn’t get to see enough of each and I was pooped out at the end. If I had to do it again, I would pick just one, but two would not be terrible.

The single best half day trip is Szentendre. You take the commuter train up. I would leave about 11:30. Takes about 45 minutes. That will cost you 450Ft extra if you have a TravelCard. Lots of nice places for lunch in Szentendre. Then you take 5pm the boat back; which is 4.500Ft. https://mahartpassnave.hu/hu/budapest-szentendre-budapest The website for the tickets is a nightmare. You can buy the ticket in Szentendre or at the Mahart office at the pier in Budapest. Or maybe you figure out the online ticket purchase. Do check the site though for sailing dates. Not every day and not all year. In the event that you cant do the boat, there is nothing wrong with the train. Here is a bit more: https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/hungary/trip-report-day-1-833-szentendre-day-trip

If you did want to make a full day out of it, then you get an early start and first you do the open air ethnographic museum first: Szentendrei Szabadtéri Néprajzi Múzeum https://skanzen.hu/en then the town. https://maps.app.goo.gl/WxBW2mBNGDA98uR28

If you wanted to try and do two of the towns, the two easiest together I think are Visegrad and Szentendre. But that’s a train and a bus and a bit of a walk to reach the castle in Visegrad and then an hour bus to Szentendre. I think I would get on an organized tour for that. The castle isn’t terribly impressive. Pretty, yes. Sometimes they have medieval theme events, so they are worth it.

Esztergom, probably more interesting for me at least. But its best done alone if you are doing it solor, as its a train and a bus and will take you a few hours in each direction. But on a tour you might find one that hits Esztergom and one other.

For the organized tours and private transfers I would check GetYourGuide and Viator and then try and track down the vendor directly … or just use the platform. Or for a private transfer see what http://www.silverwings.hu/ can do for you. I've known the owner for at least 15 years. Good guy.

Another option is Győr and the Archabbey at Pannonhalma https://youtu.be/c7Q5Ap1qUj4?si=Vk46Tc8nnThhlaAV and https://pannonhalmifoapatsag.hu/ and https://youtu.be/kBYsexwEbPc?si=p-qBwvh0nppqpjWC . A good day trip and easy with a train up to Győr on a train from Keleti, then after seeing the old town and main square in Győr, a bus to the Archabbey (or a taxi).

I don’t have a lot of experience with the actual cruises (have only done one back in 2018). But based on my tram rides on both sides of the river at the various times, I would opt for a cruise after sunset. The lights on all the various buildings in the dark are gorgeous. Haven’t made it to any of the towns you are looking at yet. I have done an overnight to Gyor (and the abbey by bus) and also out to Gödöllő Palace for a half day trip. You might decide how and where you are taking a day trip - if part of the journey is by boat, you might be seeing some of it during the day by doing that.

Thank you so much to Mr. E and to TexasTravelMom!! You are both very helpful.

My husband and I are in our 70's and we have definitely slowed down. :-) We don't sightsee until we drop any more. So I know I wouldn't want to do a 12-hour daytrip to see all 3 cities. Visiting only Szentendre sounds like it would be perfect for us. Or possibly we would take a guided tour to see both Szentendre and Visegrad. I don't feel like organizing all the transportation to both cities on our own. Been there, done that many times. I want this to be a relaxing daytrip.

I think I will wait until we are in Budapest to make a decision on the daytrip. It's possible we might decide we need more time in Budapest and forgo the daytrip.

The nice thing about Szentendre is that it's so close and so easy. It's a half day trip, so it's enjoyable with no rush.

I would help, but that's the week i am being forced to return to the U.S.

Mr. E, I enjoyed reading your report on your daytrip to Szentendre, and I loved watching the video. I am sold on Szentendre. You mention that taking the boat there means you are going against the current. Does this mean the boat is rocking and could cause motion sickness? Or just that it slows the boat down?

No, not about sea sick, just takes longer and I think the view coming into town is more dramatic. By doing the train up and the boat back, you get both experiences. Its a very nice trip. i have some friends in town for the next couple of weeks so I will be hading back with them soon.

angelafrench, I am always looking for something new. Thank you. We had a post not long ago where someone said they didn’t enjoy the ride because there were no good views of the Danube. Thats probably correct because most of the trip is on a secondary canal. But I looked at your link and the trip goes through Margrit Island which is brilliant and beautiful; then Obuda and depending on where in Obuda, that could be interesting. Then you have the long trip, mostly inland, to Szentendre. But even that is lined with local suburban living and it’s a window more into life in Hungary. But it is a long ride. https://www.tripadvisor.com/AttractionProductReview-g274887-d13221802-Budapest_to_Szentendre_bike_boat_train_tour-Budapest_Central_Hungary.html

Mr. E, thanks for letting me know there isn't an issue with rough waters and seasickness.

Angelafrench, we used to ride bikes when we were younger, but we haven't been on bikes for several years now. So I don't think we are in shape to do a long bide ride.
