Prague, Vienna, Salzburg, Budapest - in what order?

Hi, my husband and I are going to these cities in September and wonder what order is most efficient, so we can spend more time touring than traveling. We plan to spend at least 4 nights in all but Salzburg, which would be 2 nights. Any thoughts? At this point we plan to take trains between the cities. We're coming from D.C. and going from the last of the 4 cities to Marseilles (or Paris) for a week in Provence with friends.

Based on pure geography, avoiding doubling back: Prague, Salzburg, Vienna, Budapest, or vice-versa.

As to how to do this by train, as always the Man in Seat 61 has details.

Salzburg to Vienna: https://www.seat61.com/trains-and-routes/vienna-to-salzburg-by-train.htm
And Vienna to Budapest: https://www.seat61.com/trains-and-routes/vienna-to-budapest-by-train.htm

Janet - The best order to travel these 4 cities from a logistical point of view would be:

Fly into Salzburg / Salzburg >> Vienna >> Budapest >> Prague

From Prague, you might have to fly to Marseilles France. The train journey will be too long.

Of course Prague train to Vienna, train to Salzburg, train to Budapest works too. Or the opposite direction for either option.

All depends on where you can get a good arrival flight.

It depends on how well you tolerate night trains. I like night trains. And there is a night train between Budapest and Prague. So by train I would either go Salzberg, Vienna, Budapest, Prague (or the reverse) thus spending the fewest waking hours in transit.
