Planning my Hungary trip. So many things I want to see with so little time

Hi
I'm spending 10 days in Hungary starting in Budapest. I'm working on my itinerary but am kind of stuck on exactly where to go and how long. It seems like all the places I want to go to are scattered across Hungary lol.

I'm looking to enjoy the thermal baths, explore some cool castles and caves, try some wine. I would really love to see the countryside of Hungary while also having many things to do since I'll be by myself. For example, in Tokaj I heard you can canoe the landscape and while I'm also there I'm going to have some wine. I would love to rent a bicycle somewhere and explore the landscapes. I also think Lake Balaton and the surrounding areas looks really cool plus I heard there's a ghost town in that area.

I'm having such a hard time deciding because this country looks so AMAZING and I regret not booking more days. I'm going to Poland first and tbh it's tempting to completely scratch out Poland just to visit Hungary in it's entirety but I really do want to visit Auschwitz and Zakopane.

What region of Hungary should someone like me focus on and where in that region should I go? What are some of the places you guys have visited in Hungary that you really enjoyed aside from Budapest?

a1 I love Hungary so it pains me to say that it isnt the easiest country to tour.
a2 All rail lines go to Budapest, so it's easier to get a 10 day Airbnb and do short trips returning to Budapest after each; or rent a car (not something I do on holiday) or ride some busses (not much experience there).
a3 Dont know how you are getting to Budapest, but if you are coming from Zakopane check out the bus from Zakopane to Poprad, Slovakia (they are close, but there are a bunch of mountains between the two and it supposed to be a beautiful trip); from Poprad you can train to Kosice (worth seeing) then Miskolc (Lillafüred) and from there on to Budapest (for me this would be a 4 day trip).
a4 Budapest is a 4 day minimum trip, 5 is better (Ive got about a year all added up and still not bored), so that leaves 4 or 5 more days.
a5 Look at Eger, Pecs, Tihany, Gyor (Pannonhalma Archabbey), as overnights or two nights and Szentendre, Visegrad, Estergom, Vac as day trips.
a6 Once you have narrowed it down, maybe I can help.

Just a side note, I’ve been to Poland (Krakow, Wroclaw, Gdansk, & Warsaw) and Budapest (2x). You can’t go wrong in either country. Don’t over think your trip, just go, enjoy, and plan on returning for a more in depth visit.

Hello from Wisconsin,
Eger...now there is a place to spend a night or two. On one trip we bussed to it, took the train back. On another we had a rental. I must say, riding the late evening/night train from Eger to Budapest was enchanting.

The Hotel Senator, excellent. The wine caves, bring an empty plastic soda bottle to buy wine. Eger is a mini-city. Very compact. delightful.

Don't short sell all that is to be seen or experienced in Budapest. It is a great city.
