Need Help Filling in our Itinerary in Budapest

We are in the process of finalizing our trip three-week trip to Amsterdam, Budapest, Vienna, Prague and Berlin. We will be in Budapest for four nights arriving by plane on May 6 at 1:30 p.m. and leaving for Vienna on May 10th by train at 10:05 a.m. We will be staying at the Aria Hotel Budapest. This is what we have planned so far.

Monday, May 6th—5:00 p.m. reservations with Budapest Evening Food & Wine Walk.
Wednesday, May 8th—7:00 p.m. Carmina Burana
Thursday, May 9th—Budapest Jewish Heritage Tour (recommended by Mr. E)

I have been reading this forum and there is so much to see and do as well as places to eat and drink. We want unique experiences and are not interested in 5-star dining unless it is a monumental event. We are all history buffs and appreciate art and music. All input is appreciated as to what on what we must see, where we should eat and what bars are a must. Also is a Legenda night cruise worthwhile? Thank you!!

Don’t let him fool you…. Lol. Mr. É is just giving me an excuse to talk about Budapest. And I am totally jealous of Carmina Burana! I saw that online and just couldn’t make it work. Now I will have to wait to see what’s on in Oct.

It doesn’t look like there’s a dinner/performance at spinoza.hu on a May 9 - and their klezmer concerts are on Fridays. If there were one, it is definitely worthwhile. Organ concert at St. Stephen’s - on Monday evenings, in case your food tour happens to change to Tuesday.

If you like small art nouveau museums, I really enjoyed the Ráth György-villa near Hero’s Square. Hospital in the Rock is unusual. I do think House of Terror is historically interesting, as well.

The lights on the buildings viewed from the Danube is gorgeous. I don’t do “worthwhile” well - it’s too subjective. But the cruise is lovely - do it at night if you do it. As an alternative, I have a love affair with the trams and they are free with your transportation pass, which you will need anyway. I always ride the 2 tram along the river after dark (or at dusk). My last trip, CWSocial and I rode the 2 up to the end (Jászai Mari tér), walked straight ahead and caught the 4 (or 6) just across the bridge and got off at the first stop past the bridge, did a bit of looking till we found the nearest stop for the 19 (or 41) headed south and watched the buildings and bridges (and boats) from that side. We chose to get off around Elizabeth Bridge at Rudas Gyógyfürdő and then walk a ways back. We could also have walked across the bridge and caught the 2 back to our beginning place. A lovely rectangle of trams.

Walking Andrassy út and Váci út is pure eye candy, but so much of Budapest’s beauty is in the architecture that it doesn’t much matter which street I walk down. :)

There are so many good places to eat and drink that that doesn’t much matter either. I usually love Dunacorso right on the River for my first night back - but maybe one of your other nights. Another place I enjoyed last time is Porc&Presli, recommended by Christy. Probably wise to make a reservation. I also keep going back to the same places for wine, if I didn’t have that with dinner. Maybe next time I will branch out at least once. Ha!

Monday, May 6th—5:00 p.m. reservations with Budapest Evening Food & Wine Walk.
I couldn’t find this by googling. Most are day time events. But I think evening is a lot better and it gives you some time to arrive, clean up, get ready. I will assume they come to you. Most of these are 4 hours or so. That put you home at 9pm. If you still have energy the area in front of the hotel and the basilica is beautiful in the evening and if you haven’t had your fill of food and wine, plenty there. Or the roof top of your hotel.

Tuesday, May 7th
Take the 2 tram and waterfront day.
Parliament, shoes, Great Market Hall, Coros, If you are interested in antiques then Falk Miska utca, etc
And this is the day I would do Vorosmarty ter and Vaci utca. If you want to see the inside of the Parliament, get your reservation and then we work out an order and a route
Evening? Opera or Operett or Jazz Club or Evening dinner on the Danube.

Wednesday, My 8th
Andrassy ut in the morning. Walk the length, do the house of Terror, Hungarian House of Music, Heroes Square, maybe the Railway Museum if you are interested in that (I love it), Lunch along Andrassy ut. Maybe you guys are into the Bath House?
Afternoon Buda Castle Hill District
Evening? 7:00 p.m. Carmina Burana

Thursday, May 9th
Jewish Budapest Day
Pick up what you missed elsewhere

Just be sure to have your guide on that first night walk you past a vending machine and help you buy a 72 Hour TRAVELCARD .... (NOT a BudapestCard from the hotel clerk).

Or if you want to use the phone App wait till you are leaving your hotel for the first time, then buy on line. (TexasTravelMom will have to explain. I live here and I dont even understand the thing).

I highly recommend visiting the Dohány Synagogue, one of Europe's largest and most magnificent synagogues, adorned with stunning Moorish architecture. Inside, you'll find an exhibition detailing the history of the Nazi occupation and the Jewish ghetto. This visit offers a profound journey, intertwining hope for the future with a deep and moving education about the past.
