Near the Casati Hotel

I got a question about things around the Casati Hotel. I didnt want to junk up that thread, because its not the topic on the thread. I sent one PM to answer it, then two more wanted. The RS PM form doesn’t allow to send the same message multiple times, so here is my response. After all the bother I wish I had written something better than this.

For anyone staying at the Casati or around the Opera House this might be useful.

Unfortunately there is some construction next door to the hotel, not noisy or anything, but does ruin the appearance of the street a bit. Still, very good choice and the Tuk Tuk Bar inside has a great selection of Gin.

Let’s walk up the street (north more or less).

Next door is the Uj Szinhaz (New Theater) https://ujszinhaz.hu/. Very unique, inside and out. https://www.ablogvoyage.com/uj-szinhaz-budapest/ and an interesting history. I think you can learn more on Wikipedia if you are interested.

A few hundred feet further up the street on the right is the Pata Negra Asador Tapas & Steak restaurant. Maybe the best Spanish in town. https://patanegra.hu/ You are in a world class city with a population equivalent to Houston and an area equivalent to Chicago so you should expect, and try, not just Hungarian fare.

Turn right down Vasvari Pal utca on your right and on the left is the Lions Locker which is part luggage storage, part café and run by the nicest family and staff in town. If it is not too busy they will talk your ear off. Good choice for breakfast. https://www.lockerbudapest.com/

On the right a bit further up is a yellow building, not particularly unique in design and needing some fresh paint. If the first door is open, knock and say hello (my home).

Next up on the right is a laundry if you need it.

A little further on the left is an old still used orthodox synagogue / religious school. Doesn’t look like a synagogue? It’s because they hid it in the building courtyard. Look in the main building doors. https://vasvarizsinagoga.hu/

Finally, at the end of the street on the left is Kadarka Wine bar. Door to door 260m and about a 4 minute walk. http://kadarkawinebar.com/

You are now also at Kiraly utca and District VII. Go up any side street on the opposite side of Kiraly utca and you will find a brass marker on the sidewalk indicating when you are entering what was the Jewish Deportation Ghetto.

What you didn’t realize on the walk from the hotel to the ghetto was at least a half dozen of the buildings you walked past were Yellow Star Houses, as was the building that houses Kadarka for instance. https://www.yellowstarhouses.org/#overlay=about
Now from the hotel let’s go down Pauly Ede utca to the center of town.

You have to do this once for the typical street and typical architecture. Near the end are two restaurants that are very good for lunch or dinner. https://pest.vakvarju.com/ and https://www.bohemtanya.com/ both very Hungarian (Bohem tanya maybe a tad more so). Along the way are a few coffee shops and at Kaldy Gyula utca you will find https://naspolya.hu/ a pastry shop with a sort of Hungarian cult following.

At the end you are pretty close to the terminus of the 47/48/49 Tram, which you will need sooner or later.

Andrassy ut time.

Well you chose the Casati I assume because it’s a few hundred feet from the Opera House on Andrassy ut. Between your hotel and Andrassy ut is the Budapest W Hotel. The history of the building is fascinating and the architecture is pretty amazing. This is from before the renovations https://welovebudapest.com/en/article/2014/11/26/the-incredible-history-of-the-drechsler-palace/ and after the renovations https://hungarytoday.hu/vacant-for-twenty-years-the-legendary-building-is-now-a-luxury-hotel/#:~:text=The%20Drechsler%20Palace%20was%20built,interior%20design%20of%20the%20project.

For Andrassy ut you need a good guide book. But close to your hotel there are few places I like.

Actually on Andrassy ut next to the Opera House is the Callas Café. Very good Hungarian food. Nice atmosphere. Music. Watch for it as a French Restaurant in an upcoming movie (saw them filming a few months ago).

On the right side of the Opera is Hajos utca. Walk up that for a pedestrian path for restaurants and a few bars. Most very good. Also here, on the right on O utca is the best massage in town https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100075950502757 . One place you will walk past is called the Cork Breakfast & Wine https://maps.app.goo.gl/p86RdsTdGK2ehcUAA . Great food and wine, and run by some young Ukrainians. So go help the cause. There are few good wine bars in the area, ask and I can send you a list.

Another block further up Andrassy ut is Nagymezo utca. On one side of Andrassy ut is Két Szerecsen https://www.ketszerecsen.hu/en . Its been around since my first visit 20 years ago. Sort of an institution of nice Hungarian food (it is at the corner of Nagymezo and Paulay Ede which is the street your hotel is on …. See, good location).

The opposite side of Nagymezo is the Operett theater and the equally as beautiful (but Hungarian language) Thalia Drama Theater. Also here is a Japanese place with pretty excellent sushi and really lovely dining experience with good wine at a place called N28 https://n28.hu/ .

I could go on endlessly, but these are what is closest to your hotel.

Thank you, Mr. E!!!
After this post I booked it!
Callas house had mixed reviews and I had Hotel Moments booked. But after reading and re-reading your post I decided to go with it. I understand about the construction next door. We will try to use our imagination :)
Thank again!!

Do understand that it has been so long that I stayed in a local hotel, I can't recommend one. All I do is talk about neighborhoods.

Sure. I understand. I read recent reviews and they're pretty good. I have time till December to make my final decision. After all, these two hotels are quite close to each other.

The Hotel Moments might be a tad better for a short stay. The Casati better if you want to get more local culture and color. Both very convenient because of Andrassy ut and both about the same distance to a metro station.

So, today I walked past the hotel Casati. I thought I should let you see the construction. https://1drv.ms/v/s!Ai7Zk-szxfTJi785vV5p9FK54f0OYA?e=lNkKyl The video begins looking at the front door and ends at the M1 metro station.

There have been a couple of RS types that have stayed there in the past few months and loved it, and the construction was there at that time too. This is also the hotel where the RS person who had a collapsed lung while in Budapest was staying and apparetly they were very helpful for her and her husband. So a lot good to say, but still, thought the video would help.

Thanks for the walking video from the Casati hotel towards the Opera House. We plan to attend the Ballet Classsical Bravura on Sunday April 21 at the Opera House.

Mr E,
Next time we’re in the neighbourhood you shall have to be our personal guide and we can have a stroll together. I did not know about the Yellow Star Houses! Our lunch on the banks of the river in October isn’t going to provide enough time…well, perhaps it will with free public transit for us over 65!!
Have a great summer!
