My friend and I are traveling to Hungary in 3 weeks for a few days and we are going to stay in Budapest but want to take a day trip to Miskolc to visit the area that was once Hejocsaba. I have not been able to find any forums where people travel to Miskolc. Does anyone know anything about getting around this particular town?
Actually Miskolc is not a bad jumping off point for some other interesting places.
Hejocsaba had a pretty active Jewish community prior to WWII and there are some remains of that still extent. No, I didn't just happen to know that. I looked it up.
You can go to Google Earth and do a little street viewing possibly.
Thanks for the info. We do have a specific reason to go, my grandmother was born in Hejocsaba, her parents died there during WWII and I would like to check out the area to see what it is like.
While there you might spend a night in Lillafüred and ride the forest railway that connects Miskolc with Lillafüred and beyond (I think it is still running). There is some pretty county, waterfalls and caves worth the time to see if you enjoy nature.
I do not know what we are going to do yet but I would like to take pictures of the area so that I can show my mother who never got a chance to go to Hungary but remembers the stories her mom told her about growing up in that area. She used to help her mom write letters to her grandparents and then during the war they stopped receiving letters and never heard from them again. So Hejocsaba is very much someplace we want to see.
Visited Miskolc for a week a few years ago. It feels like Southern Germany. The rust city is not true. There is a great thermal bath in the suburb of Tapolca, you swim in large, tall tunnels and caves, all indoors, so it is wonderful even in the winter. The Budapest thermal baths are not fun in the off season. Saw a magnificent Hungarian costume exhibit there. Miskolc is a 3 hr InterCity train ride from Budapest. Easy connecting with city buses and trams within the city.
