Mines, Mills and other 18th and 19th century things to see in and around Budapest

Hi All: We'll be in Budapest for a couple of days and my wife and I are both interested in historical mechanical places (mines, mills) and historic railroad related sites and activities. These are often off the beaten path, and therefore hard to track down initially. Anyone have any interesting sites to suggest that are not in the guidebooks?

Thanks, Joel

Geeee, I am stumped. There are of course the railway stations. Nyugati Station was designed by the Eiffel Company prior to that tower thing in Paris. Keleti Station is as impressive as any 18th century station in Europe.

There is a pretty decent train museum http://www.vasuttortenetipark.hu/alapitvany/gal%C3%A9ri%C3%A1k
You might like the transport museum http://www.mmkm.hu/index.php/en/transport-museum

The M1 Underground is the oldest on the continent of Europe
Plan your trip right and you can ride one of the old trains http://www.mavnosztalgia.hu/hu/programs/show/750 (the English page wasn't working too good when I tried. If you don't see any dates pop up, go to the Hungarian language page.
Hospital in the Rock: http://www.sziklakorhaz.eu/en
The funicular? The Cogwheel train?
There are a couple of Forest trains you can ride, but not in Budapest.

I know of a great mine you can visit about 3 hours north in Slovakia.................

Okay, not what you were looking for. Best I could dream up. I'm looking forward to what others come up with.

James, World: The Railway museum will hit the spot. But we're open for any other ideas too!

Thanks, Joel

Hi,

I suggest exploring Keleti. Being there gives that turning of the century feeling from a historical view. It is certainly more intriguing and historically enlightening than a few of the stations in the West I've seen when you take time to walk around and explore the stations.

Thanks, all, for the suggestions. I've been reading them all week, but this is the first chance I've had to respond. I appreciate the suggestions. Joel

Worldinbetween; You gotta love Hungarian names. YES! we will be back on the 13th of may through the 25th with a 3 day break in the center to do some exploring in Slovakia. Would love to see that place. Not sure how the wife is going to take to it, but then again, she loved driving the tank last year.
