We will be coming to Hungary from Bratislava in September. We have a total of 8 nights in Hungary. We were planning on taking the train from Bratislava to Budapest, spend five nights there, and then go to Eger for two nights. (Probably take the train to Eger but a rental car isn't out of the question.)
Then we need to be back in Budapest for one night to catch a flight out at 9 am the next day. I see there is a public airport express bus that runs frequently for I think 2200 forints each. We could stay close to the airport the night before to save the trip from the city in the morning but we haven't found an airport hotel that seems to fit the bill for us. We are flying to Paris but we still like to be at the airport a couple hours ahead, so that's a 7am arrival there...
Hubby suggested we add a third night to Eger and just go straight to the airport from there, but that looks like something that would have us up and on the road pretty darn early. (And may only be practical with a rental car, which is fine I guess.)
Alternately, we could go to Eger straight from Bratislava, although I know that means actually taking the train to Budapest and then a train from Budapest to Eger. Then when we are done in Eger we can spend six nights in Budapest and save moving for one night.
I'm not sure what makes the most sense. I was planning on a wine tasting in Budapest at Taste Hungary. I did this several years ago and they did a really nice job of helping us understand Hungarian wine. I wanted to do that before we went to Eger because everything I see for Eger is individual wineries rather than a comprehensive look at wines of the whole region.
Would love your thoughts on the logistics of this.
