Least Changes on Public Transit from Nepliget Bus station to Andrassy Opera Subway station area.

We are schlepping luggage and arriving via Flixbus for lack of fast trains from Zagreb to Budapest. (other than arriving at 11pm) We'd love to take an above ground tram, but am not sure that is an option on Mr E's map. (doesn't seem to go far enough out to that bus station.) Maybe the metro M3 to Deák Ferenc tér and get on the M1? To the Opera Stop.
Just looking for a way with the least amount of stairs to carry the bags up and down.

As a last resort we could do a taxi but learning the transit system right away would be our preference.

Thanks, Bill

The M3 would be the most direct route -- that train is way underground, so expect an escalator. However, at Deak Ferenc ter it would probably be easier to just walk up to the Opera - I found that the transfer from the M3 to the M1 was rather convoluted, and did require stairs.

You could get on the 1 tram at Nepliget, but if you trace the route on Google Maps, there are two transfer points to different Metro lines, including the M1 above the park - but that transfer looks rather involved, using tunnels under a major road to get to the Metro stop. Perhaps Mr. E would have a better option.

Or else consider a cab.

The problem is that you are arriving at 11pm. It's late here now, so I will check tomorrow but the M3 may not be running after 11pm. In any event, that late, luggage, fatigue ... call City Taxi. A lot easier. Maybe $18.

The last M3 train from the bus station is at 23:46, so, technically, you can make it. The M3 was upgraded a few years back so there are elevators or a Funicular looking thing and escalators.

The M1 is all stairs. But it also stops at 11:46 and you might be cutting that close.

Taxi

Or there are night busses. Download the BudapestGo App. When you arrive at the bus station, input your destination and the app will tell you the best way by bus, Tram or metro.

Taxi.

We will arrive in Budapest around 3pm @ Nepliget bus station because we will take the bus. We are taking the bus since the fast train arrives way to late for us to take as mentioned in the op, so the recent comments are not really relevant for this thread.

It was late and I misinterpreted "other than arriving at 11pm" . Maybe a person taking the train will find the thread and find it relevant. You seem to have it all figured out. Have a great trip. Anyone else coming into the bus station, there are some options other than those listed above. But not probalby not relevant to this thread, so PM me.

It might depend on how MUCH luggage you have. The M3 is just cross the street and easy and escalators down. But Mark is right about stairs at Deak Ferenc. There’s escalators up, then a weird turn and turn and up some stairs to change to the M1 (all with signs, though). Then you have a flight of stairs up at Opera.

If the weather is nice, the walk to the Opera is nice. Google Maps always tells me walking is faster than the M1 (but I often don’t listen lol). I rarely take a taxi but you CAN call Uber (which is a taxi, but guarantees you your price) with only data and no phone number (don’t know how you are handling that aspect).

The stairs at Opera are not much, since the M1 is just below street level, as it as built with "cut-and-cover".

TexasTravelMom, unless something has changed in recent months, Uber does not guarantee your fare in advance, they give you an estimate. You were correct in saying it is a Taxi company here. That is exactly what it is and it charges the same time and distance charges as every other taxi company, because that is set by local law. The cars are all yellow, the drivers have commercial licenses, and there is a taxi meter in the car. You do get the convenience of using your Uber App, same app you would use in the US. All being equal I will stick with CityTaxi and thats maybe as much out of habit as anything else. For 20+ years they have been darn near perfect for me and done me a few favors and provided a few services they really didnt have to. So they always get my recommendation. Same fare as Uber too. https://justbudapest.com/uber-budapest-has-returned/

As for the ease of luggage on public transportation there is a legal limit on what is allowed and a pratical limit on what is convenient depending on the time of day. Our rush hour starts a bit early but that depends on the day of the week and there are some routes and sections of routes that are crowded. Generally speaking there is no place to put luggage and it doesnt really fit in front of you if you are sitting down. So you have to stand with it. Please dont put luggage in empty seats thats bad form. There are ome open area for HC and baby buggies. You can use those if there are no HC or baby buggies. Dont block the asiles either. The doors only stay open 10 to 15 seconds for those getting off and on and obstructing the door or the asile can be a real pain for others. One carry on bag, easy. Two bags or large bags trickier. Unless you have a great sense of balance, you gotta figure out how to hold them and hold on to somehting with one hand when the metro train starts and stops or you go down. But the ride from the bus station to the Opera is only about 30 minutes.

Agh! I can’t believe I totally forgot the City Taxi app! Absolutely that is what I would use if I got to the bus station and wanted a taxi.

You can always call, Bill, if you are someone who travels with telephone capability (I rarely use that); but if you set the app up ahead of time at home, you will have an easy option for honest, reliable taxi should you decide you’d rather go that way than the metro. Works just like the Uber app except it runs on a meter and you can actually pay cash or card at the end of your ride. English isn’t a problem.

Metro is totally doable, depending on how tired you are and how much stuff you are carrying around at this point in your trip.

Thanks for all the information! We will probably just take the M3 to Deak FT and walk the rest of the way to the Apartment on Andrassy ut. Our bags are small and light, just what qualifies for carry-on of an ITA airways international flight.

I am sure you meant the M3, but just in case…..

And you can walk or take the M1, depending on weather as you see fit. Neither are difficult - especially when traveling light! Enjoy - I am looking forward to being back in April!

Take the M3 a few stops to the Corvin stop.
Get off, go up to the street and get on 4 or 6 Tram. Sit on the right side for the best views (like the NY Palace) Take it a half dozen stops to the Oktogon stop. Walk down Andrassy or use the M1. Will take no longer than going to Deak Ferenc ter and it puts you above ground to see the city.

The M3 in the direction of Újpest-központ.

The 4 or 6 Tram (both on the same track) in the direction of Széll Kálmán tér.

Don't know where you are staying but the walk from the Oktogon to the Opera is about 5 minutes and the buildings are interesting and the avenue in general is beautiful. Walk all of it before you leave.
