Komarno

Anyone been to this town? We had thought to go from Trnava to Gyor after reading James and a few mention Gyor as a great stop on the way to Budapest. I found the train too long and Student bus sold out. So I saw Komarno during my search and the train trip is shorter than to Gyor. Any ideas? Is it a interesting place for a night?
Thx!

Komarno, as in Komarno, Slovakia? Never crossed the river but on the Hungarian side the town is Komárom. In Komárom is Fort Monostor which is really pretty fascinating if you are into that sort of thing. http://www.erod.hu/en/erodrendszer/fort-monostor I enjoyed it. Beyond the fort, I never really explored the town. At the entry to the fort is a long narrow two story brick building in a sad state of repair. It’s my understanding from a few references that this was a transfer camp during the holocaust.

Between Komárom and Budapest is Tata. Tata is a pretty town with a beautiful small castle on a lovely small lake. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tata,_Hungary

Of course if I were in Trnava I would head east to Banská Bystrica and Banská Štiavnica, Slovakia; then drop south to Budapest. Not sure about the train or bus schedules as we generally go by car.

Oh, and I forgot to mention, my son did an internship in Olomouc last fall. For his departure celebration his adviser took him home to the family farm to enjoy a pig killing. He was truly amazed. They ate every part of the pig. It was one of his favorite experiences while there. :D

I was just kidding. There is a company that actually brings tourists to these events. I think it would be fascinating. The best part of a trip for me is the people I meet along the way; and what better way to meet good people.

Great to hear you had a good time at the pig killing. Milk straight up is quite tasty.
We decide to stay at Trnava for the night with a few hours in Bratislava. Then head on to Gyor.
After checking out several of the towns mention , we decided a return trip is a must. I am beginning to realize how much there is to offer in these countries. :D
Your blog is fantastic! Now that all the kiddos have gone back to their colleges ( I have 5 sons) I will very much enjoy it. Glad you mentioned it. :) Thx!!
James, one day I will look at the Youtube you posted, Haha ;)

@worldinbetween; I went via Google Earth to Komarno, SK and it actually looked pretty interesting. Did you see the fort when you were in Komarom? I really enjoyed that afternoon. Have you been to Tata? Enjoyed that a lot as well.

Never implied to stay there..........sorry. Too close to Budapest, I would just head on to town. I would stay in Sopron or Gyor if I found myself near either. AND, if you could find yourself in Gyor on the 26th: http://bences.hu/lang/en/cikk/karacsonyi_orgonakoncert_a_bazilikaban_2014_december_26.html This would be a very, very special event in this place https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3751/11113597195_30629819e9.jpg with the monks.
