Itinerary from Belgrade to Budapest

The "High Speed" train is scheduled to hit speeds of 100mph in Hungary! They say the full trip is 2:40 to 3:17 but I dont believe that counts border control. I would guess another 40 minutes until I see somehting different. Some reports are there will be two trains at first ramping up to 6 a day, other reports just say 6 a day. I havent seen a start date. They said Feb or March. Well, Feb doesnt look like it will happen. If you get some information, please post it.

Day 1 Belgrade to Subotica (you could take an earlier train to Novi Sad then join the high speed train from Novi Sad)
Day 2 Subotica to Szeged
Day 3 Szeged to Budapest

But it all depends on the times of the trains. Dont know. I think so much in such little time is iffy for my style as you may only get a few hours in each city, but each to their own. When you have the train schedules then you can figure it out. Maybe if you have more than 4 full days planned in Budapest you can spend more days on the trip?

Thank you for your quick responses. I like the slower approach especially with train uncertainty. I will stay tuned to train changes but plan on just Subotica and Szeged. I have my 2 week trip divided as follows: 3 days in Sarajevo, 2 days in Belgrade, 3 days in Subotica/Szeged, and 3 2/2 days in Budapest.

Correction: 3 1/2 days in Budapest

Is this what you had in mind?

Day One: 10:00 Belgrade to Subotica 11:19 (1:19 that’s the fast train)
Day Two: 10:30 Subotica to Szeged 11:57 (1:27)
Day Three: 08:44 Szeged to Budapest 11:09 (2:25) I don’t think this is the “fast” train. If you are 65 or older, this train is free unless you want a seat reservation, then its about $2.

Day Four: Budapest
Day Five: Budapest
Day Six: Budapest
Day Seven: Leave

Personally, I would rather do one city in greater detail (2 nights). Either one, because I have read good about both. Here is an interesting blog

Belgrade, well I visited once for a few days, and I change planes there once or twice every year, but its not a place that gives me a warm fuzzy feeling.

I have:

Day 1 Morning train to Subotica, stay overnight
Day 2 Late morning train to Subotica, stay 2 nights
Day 4 Morning train to Budapest

I had preferred Sofia to Belgrade but no direct flights from Sarajevo and we wanted to see the art nouveau in Subotica and Szeged.

That part of the world can often take some creative travel plans to get around. But yes, its Sarajevo to Budapest that has me changing planes in Belgrade every year. Also sometimes when my shedule out of Podgorica doesnt work with WizzAir.

Sofia I enjoyed a lot. Belgrade .... eeeeeehhhhhhh. If you have the opportunity to see Novi Sad I understand its worth it. I have some friends that have a home there so someday I will show up and knock on the door.

Belgrade is a pretty nice smaller airport but I can not remember being on Serbian air when it was on time. I just started doing really long connections. The airport in Sarajevo is very much "okay". The taxis are interesting though.

I love the cost of the trains on that route to Budapest. $12 more or less a leg. I read that the highspeed train wont cost much more. The standard trains scheduled now go into Nyugati Station in Budapest. In someways that can be pretty convenient depending on where you are staying. But I read that the new highspeed train is going to Keleti station. I continue to laugh at 100mph being high speed, but its faster than the Vienna train.
