I will be in Hungary from 9/29 through 10/7. I'm planning to spend 4 days in Budapest, and I'd like to go to Eger and Holloko as well. I will have 4 days for the Eger/Holloko part of the trip. Would I be better off booking a room in Eger then taking a day trip to Holloko or booking a room in Holloko separately? I will not have a car so will be using public transportation for the entire trip. Any help would be welcome. Thanks.

Eger to Holloko is 3.5 to 4 hours by public transportation and about 2.5 to 3 from Budapest. So, I would suggest you go to Holloko either coming from Eger to Budapest or going to Eger from Budapest so there is no back tracking. Yea, a room for the night makes sense. Note, this isnt from experience, just me thinking out loud. I don’t think that the castle and the ethographic village are within walking distance of anything so not sure how you will get around once there. Might be worth hiring a guide with a car in Budapest and do a guided tour.
