We’re sailing on Viking Grand European Tour from Budapest to Amsterdam on 9/25. How will flooding affect our trip. Viking has no notifications posted yet.
Our river cruise this week was canceled 9/18. Water levels were too high this week. Hopefully water levels go down by next week for yours.
Thank you for responding. Sorry your trip was canceled. Were you scheduled with Viking or was it another cruise company?
I am watching river levels also.
From what i read they expect river levels to drop by 9/24. I sure hope so, we are scheduled Passau down starting 9/28.
Rivers are still rising around Budapest, but going down in Vienna and Bratislava. Not sure how long it takes the crest to travel down river.
Looks like the crest has come, things should start getting better now: https://sites.research.google/floods/l/47.5937/19.0812/13/g/hybas_2120492220

All about 12 hours old, but you can see that the water is still way below the upper embankment wall. The lower level that is under water is only a road and a walkway and the gangways to the ships. But I suspect it came up a bit more since these were made.

You can use this link to get current flood status, and get some expectations of follow-on conditions, but it won't let you know if there are obstacles like flotsam or debris or damaged bridges. https://earlyfloodalert.com/paw/index.html?commonid=24225000-de
I was on a Viking cruise last week Budapest to Passau. We disembarked on Sunday morning. On Saturday the fire department in Passau was busy placing sandbags along the riverfront.
Our ship was supposed to be on its way back to Budapest with another group of passengers, but has been in Linz since Monday, per Cruise Mapper (on that website you can look up the current location of the ship you're supposed to sail).
There's a thread on Cruise Critic about water levels on the Danube. Someone has been posting information about the locks between Budapest & Passau and about half of them have reopened. So I guess the situation is slowly improving, but no idea how that might affect your sailing.
So sorry your cruise was cancelled. I thought the river cruise companies have a lot of work arounds (separate boats, etc.)
Mr. E., once again, you rock! Thank you for the video of the tram ride, I assume the large building is Parliament? We are in Budapest Oct 18th/19th. Our cruise leaves the 20th. Are any of your sources for the long term weather outlook?
Marie, I took that video myself with a cell phone years ago. My office IT person patched it together and added the music. I have used a Hungarian IT person for my Texas company for about 15 years. Some old song about a tram ride. If you look close you can see me in a passing tram's window reflection.
I dont have a crystal ball. I use this: https://weather.com/weather/tenday/l/Budapest+Hungary?canonicalCityId=41934362832e3bdde0777309cb400048f1ea695ded1fe14e66d939a594ec5450
But no telling by 18 October. What ever it is, I will share it with you.
We do have rain in the forecast next week. When rain is shown in the forecast, know that in all my time here at every time of the year I have never experienced a thunderstorm or a heavy downpour. Oh, a few times I saw lightening once or heard a clap or two of thunder but that was about it. Rain is almost always light intermittent showers. But you would have to study the entire Danube Watershed up river from here to begin to guess how it will affect the river boats.
Yes, the water is receding. One thing I learned from this is that the European news is as overly sensationalized as the US news. I read more than one article about Budapest that began with things like Danube Bursts it's Banks in Budapest. Never happened. A few leaks here and there but nothing that presented a great inconvenience. Then there was the "Record Breaking River Levels" Near as I can tell from all the conflicting information, the river level broke every record since 2013. Well, that only 11 years. Not that people havent suffered in low lying areas. I am sure that they have, but the forum is about can i visit and what will it be like. To that the answer is yes, and pretty much like normal.
