Hot in Budapest

It’s hot as the blazes in Budapest. Life is predicted to return to normal the middle of next week (highs of 80F to 85F).

Might hit 100F today, but for a little context the humidity here tends to be low most of the time. 100F & 60%RH Like Atlanta = A Heat Index of about 129F, while 100F & 30%RH Like West Texas = A Heat Index of about 102F. The Heat Index is just a guess of how your body responds to the heat. We could have it much worse.

Most hotels are going to limit the AC to maybe 76F if not 78F. AC in small local businesses is going to be limited. Museums should be better becuse they have to maintain certain limits to protect the inventory.

Daylight right now is about 5am to 8:30pm. Do your street tourism from early morning (75F) until lunch (95F). Then find inside activities like the Market Hall or the Parliament tour or the Synagogue Tour or a museum or Opera House, Bath House, Hospital in the Rock and returning to the room to clean up for dinner at 7pm (90F). For most of us that Heat Index thing will make things feel a little better than they really are.

When out walking, the narrow streets work for you, pick the side in the shade. The humidity here is low so just getting out of the sun makes a world of difference.

From A to B it is always best to use a tram or walk so you see the city, but the second time you make the same trip, think about the metro. Cool down there. Buses have okay AC and the newer trams as well. The historic trams have great windows.

Anything down by the river or up on the castle hill will be several degrees cooler so do that stuff from 1 till 5 pm if you cant be inside. The river generally has a good breeze and that helps as well. Then the city gets nice again about 7pm as the humidity is low and things cool down fast.

You are a tourist, don’t worry about blending in during the day on the street. The locals aren’t walking the streets 8 hours a day, so the men wear pants. You guys can do shorts. The ladies here prefer dresses and baggy light pants 10 to 1 against shorts. Doesn’t matter. You are a tourist and they love you for being here. Dinner … shows …. Ehhhhh, you might want to kick it up a few notches, but the weather in the evening is more comfortable.

Pkay, we broke 100F. Wow! Almost unheard of. Still the local ladies are in skirts, dresses, baggy pants. The over 35 local guys are in pants. The locals just refuse to slouch. Impressive. The tourists? Asians (a significant percentage) stylish, rarely shorts, big floppy hats and stylish. The rest? Shorts, shorts and shorts.

Thank you for the practical tips! We arrived yesterday on a delayed train from Praha. This morning we were at the Szechenyi baths from 8:30 to 15:45. The weather gave us a great excuse to just enjoy the day at the baths without having to be rushed. I mean, what else were we going to do in this heat? By the way, the reader board read 41° at the baths! Now back at our air conditioned apartment and will head out for dinner when the heat subsides a bit. This heat has followed us for a week now!
