Ground transportation within Budapest Hungary to Viking embarkation location.

My Wife and I are both seniors in good health traveling to Budapest in May 2026 to begin a Viking river cruise (Danube Waltz). We arrive in Budapest at the Népliget Autóbusz-Pályaudvar bus station on 10 May 2026 at 5:16 pm. We need transportation to the Viking point of embarkation at the Akademia terminal north of the Chain Bridge on the river. We have a NLT arrival time of 8:00 pm on 10 May at the longboat, in order to join a Viking excursion that begins at 8:30 pm.
From other posts on this forum I have learned a little about the taxi situation and public transportation options (underground, buses, trams) within Budapest. I am open to either of these transportation options. It appears a taxi option is most efficient and is probably the way we will go. But we are somewhat adventuresome and have enjoyed making use of public transportation on other journeys. I will relate my intentions first for the taxi:
1. Arrange a taxi in advance on a taxi app. It is my understanding that the fare can be paid with a credit card through the taxi app.
2. As of now, I would consider Bolt, FöTaxi, or City Taxi.
3. I will not hail or walk-up to a taxi in a queue at the bus station unless I have no other option.

I request information and advice including detailed specifics such as best practices for paying for a taxi, tipping a taxi operator (or not), and bus lines/numbers and estimated travel times by bus to get as close as possible to the embarkation point. Many thanks!

I would have no trouble using public transportation, but I know the system and where I am going. For you, it won't be a no-brainer. I suggest CityTaxi. CityTaxi primarily out of personal confidence and personal bias. Download the app and request the taxi after you arrive at the bus station in Budapest and are standing at the bus station street where you see the taxis. That way, thanks to the app, the taxi will find you and you will find the taxi. You can pay in the taxi with a credit card. With wait time it will take 30 to 40 minutes to reach the boat dock. If you are way early arriving at the dock, walk towards the Parliament and have a coffee here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/vcFLgX4Un5MGpFpi8

We did a Viking cruise out of Budapest and I would definitely follow Mr.E’s advice. We were there several days ahead and used local transportation frequently, but managing luggage and trying to find your ship’s berth can be a challenge. There is more than one ship on the river and it can be confusing and you don’t want to end up with a long walk.

I guess I should not have assumed you have never been to Budapest prior. That would explain skipping the most beautiful city in Europe. Maybe you were here and went sightseeing. That would explain the bus. If you wanted to tale public transportation first download the Budapest Go app then buy a 24 hour pass for about $6.50 each. You could do single tickets and that would cost about $3.50 but for that buy them out of a machine at the bus station. You will need 2 tickets each. Do not forget to validate them (not necessary with the 24 hour pass).

You can use Google Maps or the BudapestGo app for the route. I dont like the recommended route in Google Maps. I would take the M3 Metro from the bus station to Deak Ferenc tér, then the M2 Metro from Deak Ference tér to Kossuth Lajos tér and walk from there. A little shorter and a prettier walk. Travel time is under 45 minutes but it will be rush hour and the metro might be a bit crowded.

I’ve taken a street taxi at that bus station. It wasn’t as obvious as I thought it would have been where they were, but we found one on the street outside and it was fine, we didn’t get ripped off or anything like that. But definitely take Mr. E’s advice, he’s the expert here.

Slate, first I am no expert. Its amazing how much I learn from the others in the forum.

The advantages of the CityTaxi app is that it has an interactive map just Uber does in the States, and will show you where your taxi is parked.

As for just taking one from the que. I gave up trying to convince people that by and large there taxis in Budapest are honest. It makes people feel better to call one, then call one (using the app). The advantage is that your request goes in the company computer, the taxi that takes you is also logged into the company computer. Makes it near impossible to conduct any funny business.

Here is what I didnt say. If they use Citytaxi app to call a taxi and if there is a Citytaxi sitting on the street in front of them (real good chance of that), thats the taxi that they will get through the app.

Oh, and the OP mentioned Bolt and this will be true of Uber too: They are different here. They are yellow cars with lights on the roofs and meters. Bolt and Uber are just dispatch companies for independent taxi drivers. All taxis charge the exact same rate, its set by the government. The only difference is service and I like City Taxi for that reason. Point of fact is that there are more Bolt drivers than City Taxi drivers so sometimes Bolt can be faster to get a car if you arent in the middle of town.
