Our apartment is on Október 6, utca , near the cathedral. Any recommendations for good cafe/restaurants in that area? We're not interested in Michelin stars, just good Hungarian food and a nice ambiance.

Hungarikum Bistro is sort of the in place right now for reportedly excellent hungarian food. I havent actually been there yet, but Worldinbetween says its very good and she has good taste. Not to terribly far from where you are staying. A little closer is Belvárosi Lugas Vendéglő which is one of my favorite laid back places for good Hungarian food.

But this is Budapest and the charm is in then neighborhoods so take a good walk. Try out Macesz Bistro

None of these are particularly expensive. Reservations are always a good idea.

World. GREAT idea. Rézkakas Bistro is on Sas utca too. Not bad for a special "Hungarian themed" night. http://www.rezkakasbistro.hu/ but like Cafe Kor a little more cash.

Thanks so much James and worldinbetween. Always nice to have tips from those who've been there. We'll be in Budapest from Oct. 14-20, after 3 weeks in Krakow, Prague and Vienna. If you're there then, it would be fun to meet for coffee.
