I see on the website that the Gellert is closed Sept 23rd for maintenance. Does anyone know how long it will be closed? We are visiting Budapest from Oct 3 to the 8th and were hoping to visit both the Gellert and the Szechenyi. I guess if it's closed we'll try the Rudas which also sounds great. One additional question, how long to people typically stay at the baths?

As lovely as the Gellert is, the majority of it is indoors. The Szechenyi has indoor components, but the large pools are in the open and are wonderful because of that. When we visited we easily stayed 3 hours and I’m not that into hot spring type pools. I think locals will stay even longer. It’s fabulous people watching. Also, it’s worth the extra to pay for a changing room. Make sure you use the swimsuit spinner once you’ve finished!!

I stayed about 4 hours last summer at Szechenyi. This was enought time for inside areas (sauna, steam room, etc.) and to have a beer, relax and swim outside. There we plenty of people who were clearly spending the better part of the day there.
