I am looking into hiring a tour guide in Budapest for three days, possibly four. Looking for recommendations of a tour guides that people have had on a Rick Steve Budapest tour that they enjoyed. Thinking of the the Prague & Budapest 8 day tour - Budapest itinerary https://www.ricksteves.com/tours/eastern-europe/prague-budapest. Does anyone have a hotel recommendation and what hotel does this tour use?
I know they used the Astoria Hotel in Budapest at one time. Not a place I would stay.... but .....
If you drop the RS connection requirement you might get more answers
Peter Polczman was my RS Best of Eastern Europe guide, he lives in Budapest. This is his website, though I don't know if he's currently guiding. He was probably the best guide I had among the four RS tours I've taken - warm, engaging, informed, organized.
My tour was ten years ago and I have no idea if RS still uses it, but we stayed at Hotel Erzsebet - a business style hotel. Perfectly fine, good location, but I would have picked something else on my own.
My wife and I just returned from 2 weeks in Budapest and Vienna. In Budapest we hired Timea Tarjani of Budapest Jewish Walk https://budapestjewishwalk.hu/ for a day and a half. We spent one day exploring several little towns along the Danube Bend and 1/2 a day looking at Art Nouveau architecture in Budapest. She was an excellent guide and arranged the tours specifically for our interests. She was very knowledgeable and informative. I would highly recommended her.
In Budapest we stayed at the Boutique Hotel Gerlócz, http://www.gerloczy.com. I believe the RS Tours sometimes use this hotel. It's in a nice historic building in an excellent location. Easy access to public transportation and restaurants. They have a very nice cafe attached to the hotel.
On our Best of Eastern Europe trip we had Etelka Parine Berecz as our guide. She's from a small town close to Budapest and if she's not guiding for RS when you are there she might do it. If she's not able to do it, she could probable recommend someone. Out of 7 RS tours we have had some great guides but she is at the top of the list!
Does anyone have a contact information for Etelka Parine Berecz? I can't find anything online on how to contact her.
I highly recommend our guide on the July 2022 Best of Eastern Europe tour, George Farkas. He's from Budapest and, in addition to knowing everything you'd want to know about the area, he's very organized, personable, and fun to be around. The RS office probably can put you in touch with him. Good luck!
