Eger to Pecs

We're in the beginning stages of planning a trip to Slovakia (10 nights) and Hungary (12 nights) for May of next year, using public transportation. We were thinking of Czech Republic and Austria and have a great itinerary planned, but may switch to the above; so hard to choose. So we would be coming from Kosice, Slovakia by train to Eger (3 nights). From there we would like to visit Pecs (3 nights) and then Budapest (6 nights with some day trips), leaving for home from Budapest.

My question is, what is the best way to get from Eger to Pecs. Looking at Rome2rio it looks like 6+ hours by bus or train. Google maps says 5+ hours by train. Has anyone made this trip. Can anyone suggest the best way to get between the two towns? Any information or suggestions would be appreciated.

Unless you want to rent a car, I think you'll probably have to travel through (change in) Budapest. It's a bit like the situation in France, where it seems that all tracks and roads lead to Paris.

The Deutsche Bahn website says there is a 6 hr. 9 min. connection every two hours, but you have to change trains three times, and there will be a 1-hour bus leg. Trains are usually a bit more comfortable than buses, even if the bus ride is a bit shorter. I'd be stunned if there's a direct bus that doesn't require a change in Budapest.

Let's see what James E. says when he spots this thread.

I haven't been to Eger, but I liked Pecs a lot.

Thanks for your information. Sounds like it might be best to rent a car for one day. The other train trips are reasonable. On the one hand, cars are really more convenient - don't have to think about getting to the station, buying tickets ahead, getting to the B&B, and you're on your own time. On the other hand, there's the parking situations in the old towns, and the worry of getting a scratch, or an accident. We have done both. Well, there's lots of time to think about it.

Thanks again for your help!

Since you want to use public transport it doesn't sound like renting a car fits your budget scheme. Go from Eger to Budapest for 3 days then train to Pecs for 2 or 3 nights, then return to Budapest. It's not a bad train ride to do round trip and total travel time will be marginally more.

Thanks, James E. We don't mind renting a car but I was trying to give my husband a break, especially since most days will be spent in the towns except for Budapest. It seems that renting a car might be the best option, even if only for one day.

Thanks for your information as it confirms what I had thought. We have a lot of time to decide so your information has been helpful. Thanks again.

James, we would rent when leaving Eger and return in Pecs. Usually low one way charges within a country. Have not checked prices yet but will do so before finalizing our itinerary. Thanks for reminding me of that issue. Also, a one day rental may be an issue and I will check to see if it's more cost effective to return the car somewhere in Budapest, without driving through town. Lots of time but it's good to plan ahead. Thanks again.
