Hello fellow travelers, We will be in Hungary in late September. Most of the time will be spent with relatives. We have four days on our own. We are considering renting a car to drive from Budapest to Lillafüred, stay overnight and then go to Eger for an overnight before returning to Budapest. How difficult are the roads to navigate for a couple who speaks just a little bit Hungarian? Would trian be better option? Thanks.
I've driven Budapest to Eger and that road is good. All of the other roads I've driven in Hungary have been very good. I wouldn't worry about language. You shouldn't have any trouble in the towns and cities. Go have fun.
Thank you very much for your reply. Good to know!
Welllllllllllllllllllllllllllll................................ on the otherhand, Miskolc (Lillafüred) to Eger is one of those rare instances where you don't have to return to Budapest to make the trip by train.
There is one change, the trip takes 1.5 hours or less and the cost is about $6. So figure 2:15 hours casuse you have to get to the station in Miskolc and then find your platform, etc. That vs about an hur flat if you drive. But with the train no parking costs, no road tolls, no hassle.
If money matters to you, the train Budapest to Miskolc to Eger to Budapest will set you back $25 to $30 a ticket. Plus the cost of the bus or a taxi from Miskolc to Lillafüred ..... so lets guess $35 total. But the train is free if you are >65 (you might have to pay about 600ft (<$2) for a seat reservation). The car? $100 or more a day with gas and tolls and parking?
