Does anyone have a Franz Liszt airport report?

I’ll be flying out of FL airport at 6:30 am to Schiphol on 8/23. Any guidance on what to expect in relation to the European travel chaos situation? How early should I arrive?

The 6:30 KLM flight is my usual flight out of Budapest and I haven't ever had a problem.
The airport is likely to be busy with many early-in-the-day flights, so security will likely have long lines. You'll also be traveling at a time when many Americans will likely be headed back to the States.
You won't be exiting Schengen until Schiphol, so passport control won't hold you up at BUD and Schiphol has automated almost all of the passport control functions.
How much time should you allow? I travel with carry-ons (no baggage check), have status with Flying Blue, want coffee before I fly (esp at that hour), don't shop at duty-free, avail myself of whatever I can purchase to speed my way through security, so usually get there at 5 for the 6:30 flight. I always end up with time to kill.
As they say "your experience may vary." Last I knew, you can't checkin any earlier than 3 hours before the flight.

Franz Liszt is BUD

I came in on 26 July and going out on 18 August. This is maybe my 50th trip to Budapest. I didn't notice any issues when I arrived and haven't heard or read that BUD is experiencing the same problems or to the same degree as AMS. But the ticket counter lines are always a mess, its just normal. And I have had a number of flights where they would not issue a boarding pass in advance so carryon won't always save you.

Security generally not so bad.

I am not as confident as the previous response. I have a taxi pick me up in Pest 2.5 hours before flight time. If its too early, I chill. When you enter the departure hall (after walking through the duty free shops) turn right and in about 100m you will find the earliest opening coffee shop.

Your challenge will be AMS. I went through pretty smoothly but they say most often its a mess. Never again KLM or AMS.

Okay, so I did a bit of research on BUD. Not good. Its a destination, not a hub and most of the flights connect from LHR, AMS and FRA. As a result it can be a bit of a mess.

James, what part is a mess? A few friends have flown in/out of BUD and have reported back that it's pretty much the same as usual.

Christy, you know me, all I want to write is sunshine and roses about Budapest. But ....

https://dailynewshungary.com/budapest-airport-revealed-average-number-of-flights-delayed-cancelled/

But if you do a little reading between the lines, the issues is not so much BUD as the connecting airports affecting BUD. I suspect its about the same in most airports.

Still, an "interesting" time to fly. My flight in on 27 July was without incident and on time. I will expect my flight out on 18 August to be the same. But .................

Great information, James, thank you. I agree, it's more in reference to transfers and also, the budget airlines.
My biggest concern about our upcoming trip to Hungary is checked bags as we'll be transiting through AMS. From what I've read however, the issue is mostly with departures originating from AMS, not transiting through. I'm planning on re-thinking my packing. I usually carry-on fairly lightly but will probably pack more than just one change of clothes.

Thanks for the info!

I came KLM this time. 12kg limit for carryon which id doable under most circumstances i think. But also because all I had was carryon and because they send you a digital boarding pass, there is no need to go to the counter and as a result no one is weighing the carryon.

Currently on my way to ZAG via VIE on Austrian Airlines. Flight departs at 7 am, left city center at 4:45 am (25 min or so ride to airport). Hardly any wait at the check in counter and security took less than 5 minutes. I had plenty of time to do some quick shopping and have a bite to eat before boarding. Easy!

From airport front door to seat at gate maybe a tad more than 5 minutes.

But I had my boarding pass and didn't check a bag. Figure another 30 min to an hour when checking luggage. The counters looked a mess and the lines were long.

Still my flight will depart late supposedly because of a shortage of air traffic controllers in Czech Republic and Germany.

Upon arrival in Amsterdam it took less than 30 minutes from gate to gate including passport control. Still, flight left 20 min lat due to air traffic control issues.

Great news regarding AMS, James. Thank you for the updated. We'll be transiting through on our return at the end of September and have a fairly tight connection. We've done it before with no issues and your report helps calm the nerves.
