Day trip Szentendre

We will be in Budapest the end of Sep for 6 nights. I would like to do a day trip to Szentendre.

Looking for info on how we can do this ourselves. We will not have a car.

I understand that you can train up there and do a boat back? Does the boat run on Oct 2 nd? Or is it better to just train both ways- which is the easiest?

We are both 67 years old and I know that we get free tram and buses in Budapest. Amm I correct that we would pay for the train to Szentendre since it is outside of Budapest.

Appreciate any information-

Mary

You take the H5 commutter train from Batthyány tér or Margit híd, budai hídfő (under the Margit Island Bridge at the Buda end).

That commutter train runs for a while through BKK service area and when I was younger and had to purchase a travelcard I only had to pay for a ticket from Békásmegyer to Szentendre because that was the part oufside the BKK region. It was a few hundred forints so no real issue. Now, according to the https://bkk.hu/en/tickets-and-passes/discounts/ it is free to over 65

For the boat, here is the webpage: https://mahartpassnave.hu/en/timetable/danube-bend-with-hydrofoils/budapest-szentendre-budapest-1 They use to publish their dates/times for the year, but I see they have changed their website. I believe that the service ends before 1 October, but I really dont know for sure.

Also good to know about the regional train discounts. We double qualify since we are over 65 and my friend is visually impaired and I am her travel companion

You qualify as being over 65, the visually impaired discount requires, I believe, certification in Hungary. But over 65 is free, so doesnt matter.
