Coat in Budapest end of September

For those of you who have been to Budapest before, I need advice on type of outerwear to pack for end of Sept into beginning of Oct.

We are traveling for 2 months starting early Sept in Greece and ending in Rome end of Oct. so obviously some hot weather. We have about 2 weeks from last week of Sept starting in Budapest, then Prague and Vienna.

I’ve looked at historical weather from last Sept and it averaged about low 60s, with some lows at 50 s and highs in mid 70 s. I know Europe was been trending hotter over past few years.

We are trying to figure out what type of jacket to bring for this stretch of the trip.

Any suggestions . A down puffer wouldn’t take much room but seems l too heavy. I live at the beach so mid 60s is usually sunny and still warm.

We are traveling with a carry on suitcase and small backpack. Appreciate any feedback

Mary

Mr. E. (you probably know of him as I think I have seen your name on this forum before), a frequent and knowledgeable poster on this forum, recently referenced this website for weather averages by month around the world. It's a good site IMO. If you don't feel like looking at graphs for average highs and lows in Budapest at the end of September, I am sure someone with local knowledge will chime in. Hope you have a great trip. https://weatherspark.com

Thanks I’ve checked out the average highs and lows or all the cities, including Budapest. Guess just wondering what people are usually wearing end of Sept / early October?

Might bring a good windbreaker or rain jacket and/or a light fleece. A few years ago we were in Budapest at the end of Sept. Did not notice that it was chilly. I am sure my windbreaker was adequate.

I think Frank is right.

I like to travel light, just easier and I am lazy. Not an ideology about travel.

It usually sweater weather here at the end of September. Comfortable enough that the outside cafes are still open and doing good business most day.

So a light sweater and a windbreaker / rain shell will handle most days. Or I like just a fairly light long sleeve shirt and a long-sleeved t-shirt below when necessary.

I took my own advice when traveling in Bosnia this past spring and it turned unexpectedly cool. I am now the proud owner of a Sarajevo souvenir hoodie. Nothing wrong with waiting and seeing.

Weather can be unexpected. Two weeks ago the temps were in the mid-80’s. The past week in Budapest has been downright cool. This coming weekend it supposed to be back up to the mid-80’s. But things begin cooling fairly rapidly by mid-August and this is a lovely place to be from mid-September to mid-October.

Thanks Frank and Mr E

I agree about Frank being right- I think packing a fleece might be a good idea. I usually pack a zipper up mid weight hoodie - don’t have any fleeces currently but might look for a lightweight one. I hadn’t considered a fleece.

We are traveling with raincoats and can use them to layer if it turns colder. It appears from historical records that Prague and Vienna will probably it be a bit colder than Budapest.

Thanks for your help

I have a barn jacket with light quilting from LL Bean that is a perfect traveller for cool weather in late September, early October. Has good pockets, wear it on planes. Otherwise a warm fleece plus an unlined rain parka from Orvis. Sunny days, a long sleeve tee, maybe a cardigan.

Tizzette, I don't know when you are coming and everyone has different comfort factors, but September and at least the first couple of weeks of October are "cool" to downright "warm".

Today it was 55F for a while. Beautiful day.

It was 55 and sunny here in Kentucky today and I wore that little quilted jacket for my dog walk. People vary what it takes to be warm enough. I like to travel in Central and Eastern Europe the first weeks of October and this is what has worked for me in Poland, Romania, Austria, Czechia, and Bulgaria in early Fall. Not needed every day, of course.
