Christmas Market Questions

Hi, we are planning a trip to Hungary, Poland, Austria, etc. We always wanted to attend the Christmas Markets as well.

We have never been to any of these countries. My question is, as a first timer, will the markets take away from the experience or add to the experience? From watching some You Tube videos, it seems that the markets take over the squares in front of some major buildings.

Thanks in advance!

We were in Vienna last year just as the markets were opening and we found them to be great fun. Because it gets dark earlier, the lights make for a festive atmosphere. Also, it was a bit more of a party at night than during the day.

I don't think they took away from enjoying the architecture of a building at all.

Personally, i wouldn't create an itinerary around the markets. Going to three markets was enough for me. Two of the markets had a few of the same vendors (so a bit repetitive), one market that I really enjoyed had local artisans instead of mass marketed items. But going to three countries might be interesting to see the markets and how they are different - especially the foods.

Also I'm at the stage of life that I'm not buying Christmas pieces, but rather giving them away.

Thank you! We were planning the trip for November to take advantage of some extra days off for US Thanksgiving. A friend of ours mentioned the markets and they could fit into the trip time

Here in Budapest, they add to the season. Yes, they take over Vorosmarty ter, but not at such a density that you can not still visit the square ( but there are better things to see any time of the year). And they take over a portion of the pedestrian zone in front of the Basilica, but they preserved the view of the Basilica and do a wonderful light show on the facade. All of our market vendors must sell local crafts. They are approved in advance, so that makes it special too.

Otherwise the early sunset means Christmas lights everywhere. This is the single most beautiful city in Europe when it's all lit up.

The city comes alive with music and theater and ice skating in the park.

I love it here at Christmas, I feel like a kid again. Shops I walk past all year and never noticed come alive as the dark outside and the lights inside allow you to see everything inside the shop, often decorated for the season ... and I get pulled in. It all works for me cause I am a romantic.

And if it's that one year in 10 or 15 when snow is on the ground at Christmas, you will be back.

The cold? No one let's it slow them down. You forget it after a while.
